The ISC2 Securing AI Strategy Workshop led by Mano Paul was an amazing experience. Firstly, Mano Paul literally wrote the book on the CSSLP, Secure Software Lifecycle Professional Certification, which is a subject dear to my heart. Celebrity aside, the content of the workshop was fresh, based in real world use cases, and spot-on relevant to the challenges organizations face in coming to terms with Artificial Intelligence.

Today, we explored InstructLab, an innovative technique that simplifies continuous development for base models. InstructLab is named after and based on IBM Research’s work on Large-scale Alignment for chatBots (LAB), described in a 2024 research paper by members of the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab and IBM Research. It provides a cost-effective solution for improving the alignment of LLMs and opens the doors for those with minimal machine learning experience to contribute. InstructLab contains a taxonomy tree that allows users to create models tuned with human-provided data, further enhanced through synthetic data generation. The project tracks AI-related incidents to inform developers and researchers with data to help mitigate adverse outcomes.
