As a huge NFL fan, Baltimore Ravens - Ahoo! I often find inspiration in the stories and experiences of players and teams. The NFL isn't just about touchdowns and tackles; it's about #teamwork, #resilience, and #leadership - qualities that are just as essential in business as they are on the field. Leadership Tip: I know I have asked this question before on here, but it is worth asking again. Why do you do what you do? If it is to make yourself look better in the eyes of others, that will definitely pass, or you will constantly be having to elevate yourself to a new level to get more attention. Either way, at some point, the world will move on, leaving you. But if you are investing in what will last - a legacy - it will outlast you. That means understanding the big picture of your actions and their long-term impacts on others. Pete Maravich held the record for most points scored in NCAA history (averaging 44.2 points per game) and just recently moved to No. 2 behind Caitlin Clark (averaging 28.42 points per game) who did in 4 years with a 3-point line what Pete did in 3 years without a 3-point line. He was the ultimate, prolific scorer, and I doubt anyone will ever surpass his average points per game. But records weren't what he wanted to be remembered by. Before he passed away, he stated, "I want to be remembered as a Christian, a person that serves to the utmost, not as a basketball player." It was about making big-picture impacts in things that last and outlast us. Some things are seasonal. Its difficult to imagine a more mutually beneficial parting of ways than Andy Reid and the Philadelphia Eagles. In less than two weeks the two will have combined for five Super Bowl victories since their parting (it will either be 4 for Andy and 1 for the Eagles or 3 and 2, respectively). Andy was an excellent coach in Philly. Philly was an excellent organization. It was time for a change. The change worked. Change can be and usually is difficult, but its up to us to determine what’s next. That starts with attitude and perspective. Anecdotally, if there were to be a draft of all of the coaches in my lifetime and I pick first, I am taking Andy Reid - eight days a week. 🏈 What Leaders and Organizations Can Learn from the Pittsburgh Steelers The 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝘁𝘀𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀 endured nearly 40 years of losing seasons before establishing themselves as a dynasty. Their transformation took time, but they remained committed to building a strong foundation. The 𝗽𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 for the team came with the hiring of Chuck Noll in 1969. Noll's leadership, coupled with consistent ownership from the Rooney family, cultivated a culture of winning. The Steelers 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘆 through the drafting and development of talented players. Noll and his team prioritized long-term growth over quick fixes. Their legendary 1974 draft, which produced four future Hall of Famers, exemplified their talent identification. Recognizing defense as their strength, the Steelers centered their dynasty around the 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻, establishing a clear identity that proved difficult for competitors to overcome. As we kickoff the NFL season (my favorite time of year), I will once again post how the Detroit Lions are the prime example on how transformational leadership can impact an organization. You need a box of tissues handy when reading the history of the Lions. Decades upon decades of disappointment until… Enter Shelia Ford Hamp, Brad Holmes, and Motor City Dan Campbell. This trio of transformational leaders created a vision for the future. The first step of that was bringing in players who above all else, held the characteristic of grit. All three embodied the desired culture and stayed true to their vision despite external pressure. Within a few short years, the Detroit Lions are Super Bowl contenders. The team embodies the spirit of the city. The fans wholeheartedly support the team and the grit persona. Grit was picked for a reason. That word embodies the people of Detroit and its surrounding areas. Between the 08 financial crisis, volatility in the job market, and numerous other events… the people of Detroit found a way to persevere. Leadership, players, and fans are all aligned to the vision. There is a lot of depth to the transformation of the Lions and it’ll make a great case study one day. What are you doing to transcend yourself from a leader to a transformational leader?
