I ended May strong by attending an inTulsa webinar! Job Search Strategy for Career Transitioners - May 30, 2024 It seems everybody has heard of Tulsa Remote, but there is also inTulsa! inTulsa connects innovative businesses with diverse talent—in other words, they help local Tulsans get jobs! They regularly host events, and I finally got to attend one virtually. This webinar was right up my alley because it was tailored for career pivoters, transitioners, and individuals seeking new opportunities who have had long-term employment at one company. This is definitely a pivot! Here’s what I learned! - https://lnkd.in/g_RbyTSz has been revamped compared to when I tried to use it last year! It has more filters! Less rage! - https://lnkd.in/gNBCnDy7 exists, and has a lot of handy articles, career advice, and a bunch of other goodies I can read throughout June! There’s even a podcast! - Tools like Grammarly and Canva can help you write/design cover letters or introductory letters that you can then use at Network Fairs and Job Fairs so people remember you. - Free resources like Hiration and Teal can help tailor resumes for each application using keywords from job descriptions. The webinar provided deep insights into navigating LinkedIn and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), crafting impactful resumes, and effectively communicating our skills. It also highlighted the importance of networking and building a versatile career roadmap. I think events like these are nice. In the words of Sylvester Stallone, "Do you think it's easy being this good?" This webinar reassured me that I'm on the right path, even if it feels like a long, dark hallway at times. And as Stallone also said, "My hobby is keeping busy," which resonates perfectly with my commitment to continuous learning and career development. It’s also nice that I learned a couple new things AND learned about a couple new tools that I can use to try to get my foot into the tech space. Corporate America needs to be more truthful when it comes to the jobs that are really available. Don't just fill the job boards with ghost jobs that don't exist. List the actual jobs as all of the job seekers are really hungry for employment right now. Let's get back to the vetting that we had before the information age. Indeed it won't be easy to get anywhere close to that, but let's try to make careful strides to help the displaced people that are either coming fresh out of college or have been laid off or terminated at another place of employment. The platitude that "everyone is hiring" does sound good on paper, but let's make sure that statement passes the ethical check before making that statement as fact. If that job isn't really there, don't list it. And if it is, lets try to create a level playing field for everyone involved. That job can't be offered to everyone, so provide alternatives to ensure fairness to everyone who is earnestly seeking a better future. Filling a position is all about solving a problem that your corporation is facing. The applicants provide a promising solution to that problem, so choose wisely and aid in the solution that your next candidate is looking for.

If you don’t get a response after applying for a job, don’t be discouraged! Sometimes companies post roles for reasons beyond immediate hiring. These “phantom jobs” may be posted to gauge the talent pool, to project growth to investors, or to meet compliance requirements, even if an internal candidate is already chosen. Not every job listing means they’re actively hiring, so keep applying and stay positive!💼✨
