Everyday we observe long departure queues at runways in busy airports. The FIFO strategy (First In, First Out - i.e. aircraft routing towards the departure runway as soon as they are "ready" at the parking) widely adopted by ANSPs may turn out to be strongly inefficient. The following presentation shows a different approach, focusing on the computation of the optimum runway sequence based on Branch and Bound algorithms and entailing very promising results in terms of delay, fuel consumption and air pollution reductions..
