Thinking about hiring another designer just because your team is overloaded? Think again. Bringing on external talent isn’t just about lightening the load. For a business leader, it’s about strategically positioning your company to gain an edge. The real value of an external designer isn’t in how they can help you meet deadlines, it’s in how they can elevate your entire approach. The right time to engage external design expertise is when you’re at a crossroads. Whether you’re planning a major market entry, facing a pivotal shift in strategy, or noticing that your brand is starting to blend in rather than stand out. That’s when an external designer can offer the critical insights and fresh perspectives that might be missing in-house. I’ve seen companies wait until they’re buried under work to seek help, turning what could’ve been a strategic advantage into a scramble just to keep up. By then, you’re not making strategic decisions, you’re in survival mode. Don’t wait until you’re in the weeds. An external designer should be seen as a strategic partner, not just an extra set of hands. They can challenge the status quo, fill expertise gaps, and inject the kind of creative energy that drives true innovation. So, before you put out that job posting, ask yourself: Are you hiring for capacity, or are you bringing in someone who can help you make a strategic leap? Think big. Act smart. Your brand deserves it. #DesignLeadership #Innovation #StrategicDifferentiation

Thursday mind burp... Interesting that I'm seeing LOTS of job postings for senior designers. At a time of design 'slump' what does this tell us? Have agencies lost seniors to 'independence'? Are people leaving in light of 'return to office' policies? Are they consolidating their team into smaller, more experienced units? Are 'seniors' anyone from 2+ years onwards? Is 'senior' a hook to attract talent, but the reality very different? Are teams not looking to hire juniors to feed the ranks? So many questions... You couldn't ask for more ambiguity in a swathe of ads if you tried. I can't imagine the breadth of people that must be applying to these, and the complexity in trying to filter these down to what you need.

Need regular design support? A full-time hire isn’t your only option. Many businesses assume hiring an in-house designer is the best way to get consistent design support. But is it the most efficient and cost-effective choice? Hiring a Full-Time Designer ❌ One person, limited skill set – no variety in expertise ❌ Time-consuming – recruitment, onboarding, and training take months ❌ Ongoing costs – salary, benefits, software, equipment, and overheads ❌ Fixed cost – even when workload is lighter Choosing a Design Retainer ✅ A whole team at your fingertips – access to broader expertise ✅ No hiring headaches – get started immediately ✅ Flexible & scalable – adjust support as your needs grow ✅ Predictable costs – no salaries, no extra overheads, just great design More expertise. More flexibility. No unexpected costs. Thinking about how to manage your design needs in 2025? Let’s chat. #GraphicDesign #CreativeSupport #DesignRetainer #OutsourceDesign #FlexibleDesign #CreativeRetainer

💭 Question for fellow designers and recruiters: When applying for design roles, how much of your work is appropriate to share? I’ve noticed some positions ask for full portfolios and even entire tech packs, but out of principle, I’m cautious about sharing sensitive or proprietary information. What do you think is the best practice in terms of balancing transparency and protecting your work? How do you approach this while still showcasing your expertise? #DesignCommunity #FashionDesign #PortfolioTips #TechPacks #JobApplication #LingerieDesign #SwimwearDesign #CreativeIndustry #ProtectYourWork #DesignPortfolios

Which countries offer the most opportunities for product designers? One way to answer that question is to check where companies are most likely to hire designers. Companies often prefer to open offices in countries with a large pool of talent. I analyzed a dataset of 23,589 designers working at 3,994 companies. For each country, I looked at two data points: 1) Number of employed designers 2) Their salaries (in %, relative to the US) As a result, you can see which countries have a lot of design jobs and offer high salaries. More talent could mean more competition. So I cross-checked this data with the number of open design jobs per country and it has a decent correlation. It means that countries with higher talent density also have more job openings. Obviously, like any analysis, it isn't perfect. When choosing where to live and work, consider the cost of living, taxes, etc. (Caveat—the data is skewed towards US businesses) Thanks Pave for the data (BTW they are hiring a product design manager in SF).

Designers, it's time to start valuing your time. More top companies have stopped giving take-home assignments to experienced designers, recognizing that whiteboard challenges are enough to assess their skills. While take-home assignments may still be appropriate for entry-level designers, it's important to remember that your time has value. In fact, offering payment for take-home assignments can help attract top talent. Many skilled designers skip candidacy simply because the take home assignment is not interesting to them. Let’s prioritise smart hiring processes that respect both the company’s and the candidate’s time. #design #designhiring #assignment #payment
