Demonisation. Division. Fear-inducing language to incite an individualist view of self-protection: to undermine the fundamental Australian belief of collective care and support. Attaching the “boat arrivals” tag to international students is an attempt to categorise those human beings as “them (vs “us”) and a “threat”. It is inflammatory. It is also a backflip for the Coalition who counted international students as friends when they uncapped their work rights during and after the pandemic. International Education, and the humans that are its foundation, is Australia’s 4th largest industry. Even the rhetoric that “they” are significantly contributing to our housing crisis is evidentially false. (See this article: https://lnkd.in/gnYq65gm ) Enough with this vitriol! Can we not prioritise humanity… authenticity… integrity… transparency….. ? #auspol 📸 credit: The Australian

I recently worked with Modern Slavery Unit to conduct a training session on modern slavery at Taylors College, aimed at enable international students preparing to study at the University of Sydney to recognise the signs of modern slavery, understand the prevalence of the problem, and acquire the resources to seek help. The training began with a fun Q&A session which students enthusiastically engaged in the discussion about the definition of modern slavery and whether some social cases were manifestations of modern slavery. The training then used animated videos and real-life statistics to illustrate common forms of modern slavery, such as forced marriages, false recruitment and debt bondage, with a particular emphasis on the high risks faced by international students due to cultural and language barriers, visa restrictions and other factors. Finally, students were invited to join the Student Human Rights Network (SHRN) to continue their involvement in awareness-raising and advocacy. A questionnaire at the end of the event showed that most students had a clearer understanding of the issue of modern slavery and how to seek help if they were in a similar situation, while 30 per cent of the participants even expressed their willingness to join SHRN in the future to keep following this issue and the progress of MSU's work. 💡 A few takeaways from this activity: 1. Lowering the understanding bar: Through fun interactions and animated case studies, we were able to make complex issues easier to understand. 2. the importance of interaction: the group discussions motivated students to think on their own and deepened their understanding of modern slavery. 3. Importance of awareness change: Many students expressed that they would take the underlying phenomenon of modern slavery more seriously and would be willing to help the victims. This training has made me more aware of the effective impact that a combination of fun and practical communication can have on complex social issues. I hope to have more opportunities to share this important knowledge with international students in the future! #communications #publicrelations #socialresponsibility #internationalstudents #modernslavery
