Happy to have run our first “Supervising Emotionally Demanding Research” workshop for research supervisors at The University of Edinburgh for the University of Edinburgh Institute for Academic Development! Hopefully this will be the beginning of a suite of helpful resources that help underpin the important and challenging work that supervisors do on a daily basis both in their own work and with students. Key takeaways include: 🧠 the need for a more psychologically informed research culture with structures to better support supervisors and students through challenging work 🧶 the importance of boundary work for both students and supervisors - and also that this will and should look differently for everyone, and is challenging + complex! 🫂 emotionally challenging research is often compounded, diverse, and evolving 🌍 community is key Many thanks to the participants for their thoughtful, honest, and engaging conversations - here’s to more! #researchsupervision #researcherwellbeing
