Victoria might be the broker number 2 in my agency, but she has the vision and the experience to be a business owner. She hasn’t said it but I am committed to help her grow so much, that my agency becomes her agency incubator. I don’t hold brokers down as most agencies: - Not allowing to do contracts so they are kept ignorant. - Not allowing them to process rents and sales. I believe in my adults around. - Keeping them capped to %. Yes we have our rules but they can earn up to 80% already. - Keeping them away from decision making. From Cocktails to Curveballs: My Dive Bar Adventure Back in 2019, I found myself diving into the bustling F&B scene in Johannesburg. A friend of mine had created what was, hands down, South Africa’s best cocktail bar called MOOTEE. I missed the boat on getting involved early, but when the bar got nominated in the top 10 at an international cocktail awards, I jumped at the chance to be part of it. We didn’t stop there. We decided to split the space and create something totally different, a 5-star dive bar. Enter Smoking Kills (yes, that’s the name we went with). With its quirky vibe and top-notch cocktails in a laid-back setting, the bar took off. It even landed on the world 50 Best Discovery list in South Africa. Not bad for a dive bar! Our next plan? Expand to Cape Town and maybe even Dubai. I was literally in Dubai airport, ready to sign a lease for our Cape Town spot, when the pandemic hit. Needless to say, I didn’t sign anything that week. South Africa was hit hard with lockdowns, alcohol bans, the works. Meanwhile, I had relocated to London and couldn’t travel back. Eventually, I sold my shares and stepped away from the business. It wasn’t the ending I expected, but what a ride! What did I learn? That business is full of curveballs. You have to adapt, stay focused, and sometimes let go.
