🔬 PFAS-Free Alternatives for High-Performance Applications Fraunhofer Institutes (Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft ) are developing innovative PFAS-free elastomer and coating solutions for technical applications. The project “Hate-Fluor” addresses use cases in areas such as seals and electronics, with a focus on the following technical aspects: • Enhanced thermal stability: New antioxidants improve the thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of fluorine-free elastomers, extending their service life. • Custom formulations: Optimized elastomer blends are tailored to meet specific industrial requirements, ensuring durability and strong adhesion. • Advanced protective coatings: Lacquer and plasma coatings reduce friction, enhance barrier properties, and protect against oxidative and chemical stress—achieving up to 99% reduction in water vapor and oxygen permeation. These developments support #environmental #compliance by facilitating the transition away from PFAS, while addressing the technical challenge of replicating the robust performance of fluoropolymers. This work is especially relevant in light of the European Chemicals Agency’s (#ECHA) proposed #PFAS restriction due to concerns over environmental persistence and health risks.
