As chair of SMPTE RIS-OSVP I am excited to unveil our first open-source initiative - OpenTrackIO which is a free and open protocol designed by the RIS OSVP SMPTE Tracking group that seeks to improve interoperability in Virtual Production encoding, tracking and robotic systems. Developed through a collaborative effort involving industry-leading vendors, technology providers, and end users, OpenTrackIO tackles the increasing complexity of real-time camera tracking. Early adopters include Epic Games, Mo-Sys Engineering Ltd, and Stage Precision GmbH who have already embraced the protocol, signaling its potential to become a key standard in the industry. As the first major standard since FreeD, it offers a modern solution to key challenges in virtual production workflows, such as the need for higher positional and rotational precision, sub-frame synchronization, and standardized lens data, all in a human readable yet highly efficient format. OpenTrackIO is engineered to deliver a new level of system interoperability in camera tracking, minimizing discrepancies through standardized data formats and clearly defined units of measurement. It also integrates closely with the SMPTE 2110 suite, ensuring compatibility with existing media workflows while meeting the stringent low-latency requirements of today’s production environments. With its open and extensible data model, OpenTrackIO is designed for flexibility, making it adaptable to a range of use cases from traditional virtual production to advanced augmented and mixed reality applications. By creating a standardized approach to transmitting and synchronizing tracking data, OpenTrackIO resolves many of the issues that have hindered production efficiency in the past, unlocking greater creative potential from on-set workflows through post production. We’re excited to see OpenTrackIO in action at the SMPTE summit and anticipate its significant impact on the future of media production.
