The Australian Government has released its 2024 National Hydrogen Strategy. The #strategy provides the framework to guide Australia’s production, use and export of #hydrogen. This will position Australia to become a global hydrogen leader. H2eart for Europe is pleased to have contributed to MEP Prof. Dr. Andrea Wechsler (EPP, Germany) Call for Input on the #Hydrogen Market Ramp-Up, launched as part of an upcoming position paper on hydrogen by the German EPP. As an alliance of leading Storage System Operators (SSOs) dedicated to developing and operating #UndergroundHydrogenStorage (#UHS) across Europe, we are committed to supporting the development of a resilient and integrated #hydrogenmarket. We believe that transparent dialogue and collaboration between policymakers and industry stakeholders are key to enabling an accelerated and sustainable hydrogen market ramp-up. In our contribution, we shared insights from our policy papers, including key recommendations on UHS deployment, regulatory frameworks, and integrated infrastructure planning to help Europe meet its hydrogen and climate targets effectively. We commend MEP Wechsler and the European Parliament for this important initiative and for providing a platform for stakeholders to engage and shape Europe’s hydrogen future. Key takeaways include: 👉Strategic Advantage: The UK's geographical proximity to Europe and existing pipeline infrastructure make it a strong candidate for hydrogen export. Pipelines offer a lower levelised cost of transport (LCOT) compared to shipping over similar distances. 👉 Export Routes: Potential export routes have been identified, with Bacton, Isle of Grain, and Teesside among the key locations. The Canadian Hydrogen Association (CHA) is pleased to announce that we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate hydrogen deployment and facilitate trade in clean molecules. The agreement was signed during the EU-Canada Stakeholder Roundtable on Regulatory Cooperation in Hydrogen and will facilitate industry-to-industry and public-private exchanges between the EU and Canada, with the goal to strengthen the role of hydrogen for decarbonization in global climate and energy negotiations. “Europe is a vital and dependable partner for Canada, sharing our long-standing commercial ties and ambitious climate goals, along with bold hydrogen strategies. This new partnership with Hydrogen Europe will enhance our members’ global reach to make hydrogen affordable, tradeable, and equitable worldwide. 🚨New RUSI report, ‘International Engagements on Low-Carbon Hydrogen’ by Dan Marks, Cinzia Bianco, Ph.D and Dr Carlos Solar is out now! 🌱♻️🌍The low-carbon hydrogen supply chain will likely gain national security relevance in the UK over time as the country moves towards net zero. 🤝 The UK expects to produce sufficient hydrogen to meet its own demand and become a regional exporter. The result is a focus on international engagements which focus on building global market architecture, rather than on hydrogen’s role in the supply of other critical materials. This raises questions about the UK’s lack of engagement with possible strategic suppliers and regions with the potential to be large-scale, low-cost hydrogen producers compared with some peers. European competitors have been more focused than the UK on using international engagements to secure future supply and to influence the direction of industries in partner countries. 🔗Our paper examines whether the UK could or should do more to ensure security of critical supply chains involving hydrogen, by examining the activities of peer countries in three politically complex regions – Africa, the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council and Latin America. Hydrogen is still the biggest challenge in the European energy transition, but also its biggest hope. Despite difficult news about pricing and delays in infrastructure, we have to make it work if we want to maintain Europe's leadership position in the race for net-zero, as well as keep our energy market (semi-)self-sufficient. We see the biggest impact in our industry. Europe's capacity to produce, both for our own consumption and for exports, is either drastically falling behind in growth compared to other regions, or downright declining. Competition from abroad based on subsidized fossil fuels, lower environmental standards, and cheaper access to critical materials is drawing away investment and companies in Europe. Import correcting mechanisms such as CBAM, can only ever be part of the solution. If Europe becomes entirely import dependent, it will have little leverage to maintain its trade standards. There is a need to always have a European alternative. A strong, green, or at least carbon neutral, industry is paramount to the European economy and its ability to achieve its climate goals, at home and abroad. That is why the next edition of the Hydrogen Leadership Forum focuses on what European industry needs to get on-board with the hydrogen transition, and accelerate and expand its existing efforts. Northwest Europe, which includes the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Denmark, amongst others, is in the middle of a hydrogen adoption. The region is determined to meet its low carbon emission targets by 2030. According to a survey, the region has lots of potential in this arena.
