Labor Day Revolution......!!! The momentum of the first industrial revolution and industrialization in the 19th Century was marked by the ruthless exploitation of workers by both owners and employers. Small wages, daily work from 12 to even 18 hours, exploitation of child labor and life on the verge of existence have resulted in a series of strikes requiring decent working and living conditions. The greatest momentum was the labor movement experienced in the fastest growing industry in the United States. The climax occurred in Chicago in May 1886, when a crowd of about 40,000 members of the labor movement took to the streets, emphasizing the demands symbolized in three figures: 8 hours of work, 8 hours of rest and 8 hours of cultural education. Authorities sent strong police forces to the protesters and a fierce clash erupted, killing six workers and injuring some fifty. Many protesters were captured and the strike leaders were brought to justice. Five were sentenced to death and three were sentenced to long-term imprisonment. Since 1886, May 1st has been chosen as the date when the International Labor Day is celebrated around the world. Happy New Month! Happy Workers Day! #InternationalLaborDay #HappyNewMonth #WorkersDay #Revolution #May #Protest #Protester

Insightful perspective from the mind of a leading subject matter expert in the field of Dislocated Workers. And author of the great book "Cut Loose: Jobless and Hopeless in an Unfair Economy", a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about the topic.
I was interviewed on the show Matter of Fact with Soledad O’Brien, where we talked about the impacts of long-term unemployment, the rise of precarious work, and what we can do to make the labor market better for workers and their families. Many thanks to Soledad (Soledad O'Brien Productions) for the great conversation!

Do you know why we celebrate Labor Day? I really hadn’t thought much about it until I came across this article from history.com. “Labor Day, an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters. In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks in order to eke out a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wages. People of all ages, particularly the very poor and recent immigrants, often faced extremely unsafe working conditions, with insufficient access to fresh air, sanitary facilities and breaks. As manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the wellspring of American employment, labor unions, which had first appeared in the late 18th century, grew more prominent and vocal. They began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours and pay.” Read more at: https://lnkd.in/gukNExN4 #laborday2024 #humantrafficking
