🚀 Exciting Updates from PreMETS Project Meeting in Thessaloniki! 🚀 June 3rd and 4th, 2024 PreMETS partners had an opportunity to meet again in person. This gathering marked a significant advancement in our efforts to fuse technology and training within the predictive manufacturing industry. The two-day session was packed with strategic discussions across several key work packages (WPs), each critical to the project’s success and alignment with the industry’s evolving needs. Inspiring Innovation in Helsinki: Lessons from the Demola National Finals 🇫🇮 Yesterday, I had the privilege of representing the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) at the National Finals of Demola, hosted by the incredible team at Business Finland in Helsinki. The day was filled with inspiring pitches from brilliant students who tackled real-world problems with solutions grounded in deep understanding, creativity, and innovation. The energy in the room was palpable as each team demonstrated not just their ability to innovate, but their commitment to addressing challenges with impactful solutions. It was a powerful reminder of the transformational potential of initiatives like Demola to foster collaboration, critical thinking, and industry-academic partnerships. Key Takeaways: Collaboration Drives Success: The synergy between students, mentors, and industry partners was evident and a model we aim to replicate and grow here in the UK. Problem-First Approach: The Finnish teams showcased the value of starting with a deep dive into challenges before crafting their solutions—a lesson for all innovation ecosystems. Global Ambitions: Witnessing the scale and professionalism of the event reinforced the importance of building global partnerships to elevate our own programs. 🌟INSET Consortium meeting in Barcelona!🌟 📢 Exciting updates from the transnational meeting of the INSET project, hosted by Símbiosy at DFactory Barcelona, a cutting-edge innovation centre, with the participation of all six partners! 🎯 Our main objective during this meeting was to move INSET project forward by validating critical components such as the competency map and the formulation of a unified joint curriculum. This will involve merging modules and structuring courses tailored to industrial symbiosis project managers and planners in the coming months. ✅ This crucial phase marked the official start of Work Package 3. 🌍 Oodi: The Library of the Future in Helsinki, Seen Through the Eyes of Our PCTO Students! 📚 As part of our PCTO program abroad, focused on Innovation Technology and Environmental Sustainability in Europe, our 15 students from the module Technological Innovation and Digital Transition in Helsinki had the chance to immerse themselves in one of the most iconic and innovative spaces of the Finnish capital: the Oodi Library. 🛠️ A Center for Innovation and Creativity It’s not just a library but a true hub of technology, culture, and community. Here, our students discovered: How technology meets tradition to reinvent public spaces; The digital solutions that make Oodi a sustainable and efficient place; The Finnish approach to design, inclusive and future-oriented. 💡 What Did the Students Learn? 1️⃣ The importance of multifunctional spaces for the community, blending study, coworking, and innovation. 2️⃣ How digitalization can serve culture and education. 3️⃣ The power of sustainable design, creating spaces that are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. 🎓 A Lesson in the Future of Technology and Sustainability This experience enriched our program, showcasing how the principles of digital transition and sustainability can be practically applied for the benefit of society. Our students sometimes form an incredibly close-knit network with our alumni and staff as well. A great example of this is “TUTA”, Industrial Engineering and Management, where the Prodeko community consists of the student guild, department, and alumni organisation. There are a lot of mentoring and events in this community of “prodekoians”. 'We have incredibly successful alumni who are committed and loyal to our community. Despite their busy schedules, they make time to guide students from their alma mater', says Master’s student Saghar Sedighi Khavidak. According to Ashish Thapliyal, a doctoral researcher at the department, the alumni network is vast and rich. ’It offers a great platform for networking and learning from others who have gone down similar paths.’ Siavash Khajavi is an assistant professor at Aalto.
