I had the privilege of attending a fantastic workshop at #IACP2024 presented by my good friend, Chief Paul LeBaron and his team at the Hermosa Beach Police Department. They shared some amazing insights on “𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞: 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 21𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐃𝐚𝐲 1.” The discussion centered on why the new generation of employees often struggles in today’s policing environment, and how Hermosa Beach PD became fully staffed in 2024 with no departures to other law enforcement agencies in over five years. Their success is driven by a four-point retention program that includes: ➡️ Voluntary collateral assignments for all employees, creating growth opportunities from the very start. ➡️ A culture of wellness, ensuring that employees are supported beyond just having a wellness program. ➡️ An onboarding program that offers immediate value, helping new hires feel integrated and impactful right away. ➡️ Leadership training for all employees, so everyone has a chance to develop leadership skills before being considered for formal roles.
