M1DTW Architects, a firm founded by Christian Unverzagt, Associate Professor of Practice in Architecture, is recognized for turning a 2,000-foot abandoned commercial building in Detroit’s East Village into Library Street Collective Outpost, or LSC-O. LSC-O is now a multi-purpose, one-story facility serving as an archive and display space to showcase art from nearby galleries. The newly renovated space received a 2024 AIA Michigan Honor Award and was an Editor’s Pick in the “Adaptive Reuse – Commercial” category of the Architect’s Newspaper 2024 Best of Design Awards. The AIA Michigan jury commended M1DTW for its intelligent use of materials that resulted in an economical, yet harmonious, space. “This project proves that older buildings can be given a new lease on life, maintaining the historic fabric of our neighborhoods while moving them forward in new and interesting ways,” commented Unverzagt. DID YOU KNOW? There is a large abandoned subway system beneath the streets of Cincinnati. Proposed in the 1910s, the project was interrupted by World War I and abandoned later. Many people don't realize that Cincinnati has a subway. The main reason is that the subway has never been in operation. The subway tunnel under the streets has been silent and abandoned for over 50 years.
