So I am heading out to Las Vegas for CES for the first time (very excited). I transited at LAX and went through immigration. I've been traveling internationally on business for the past 30 years and can't count the number of times I went through airport immigration but today something memorable happened. Immigration officer: "Seems like you come to the States often? What do you do for work?" Me: "I work at Amazon in their advertising business" Officer: "So you're the one sending me all the advertising messages from Amazon?" Me: "Actually no; I don't work on advertising for Amazon; I work with companies that want to advertise with Amazon." So this is a conversation that has happened a few times before but the next question caught me completely off guard: Officer: "So what kind of brands do you enjoy advertising for?" I wasn't prepared to answer this so I was stumped for a moment. But then I brought up how alcohol are big brands in Japan (Suntory, Asahi, Kirin, etc.) and also auto brands as well (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, etc.). The officer turned out to be a Toyota owner and he seemed pleased. He closed our short conversation with a "Good luck with everything." I truly appreciated the Immigration Officer's natural curiosity and how human he made our interaction that could have easily been totally mechanical (and often times it is). Onto my flight to Las Vegas!!
