🇦🇪💥 Raytheon has delivered the first AN/TPY-2 air defense radar for Saudi Arabia as part of a $2.3-billion deal signed in 2020. The company said the radar is the first in its class to feature a complete Gallium Nitride semiconductor, providing expanded surveillance capacity and greater sensitivity to threats. On October 17, in Riga, Latvia, the European Defence Fund project 5G COMPAD (5G Communications for Peacekeeping and Defence) held its first global demonstration, showcasing various 5G network deployment scenarios at sea, in the air, and on land. The demonstration was organized by 5G COMPAD consortium member LMT Innovations and took place at the military base "Daugavgrīva." During the demonstration, several innovative 5G network deployment options were presented. These included potential network coverage simulations, 5G drone tests, satellite communication integration, and other 5G applications on ships at sea. The 5G COMPAD demonstration in Latvia’s 5G testing environment allowed for the evaluation of 5G performance under various conditions and the exploration of new potential use cases. Within the 5G COMPAD project, world-leading partners from the telecom and the European defence industries join forces to enable recurrent integration of 5G and beyond into multi-dimensional robust defence communication systems to sustain effective and efficient information superiority for European armed forces. At Valiant Shield 24, Raytheon demonstrated a simulated complex missile engagement leveraging the US Army's Lower Tier Air and Missile Defence Sensor, or LTAMDS, and Integrated Air and Missile Defence Battle Command System, IBCS, launching the US Navy's premier, long-range effector, Standard Missile-6 (SM-6). Using track data from Army LTAMDS simulators and operational SM-6 engagement control software interfaced with IBCS, the test demonstrated the successful integration of these existing, respective Army and Navy program capabilities. The EuroDASS consortium has revealed advancements in electronic warfare capabilities for the Eurofighter Typhoon, ensuring its effectiveness against evolving threats through to 2060 and beyond. Drawing expertise from Leonardo, ELT Group, Indra, and HENSOLDT, in collaboration with systems integrator BAE Systems, the new system builds on the foundation of the existing Praetorian Defensive Aids Sub-System (DASS). This next-generation system promises enhanced situational awareness, increased survivability, and sophisticated threat response. It will feature advanced threat characterisation, Digital Radio Frequency Memory (DRFM) capabilities, and compatibility with a high-powered electronic attack pod for Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) missions—key for NATO requirements. Wideband Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Electronic Counter-Measures (ECM) will also provide amplified self protection power. Designed as a form-fit retrofit for the in-service DASS, the system will require no modifications to the aircraft’s airframe or flight envelope. This ensures seamless integration with both new and existing Typhoon aircraft, offering operational advantages to air forces in Europe and the Middle East. “Typhoon will be more capable, more survivable, and more available,” a EuroDASS said in a statement. Diehl Defence and Elbit Systems Land have signed a Teaming Agreement aimed at bolstering rocket artillery capabilities across the continent. This cooperation will specifically focus on producing advanced rocket artillery ammunition for the PULS (Precise & Universal Launching System) and the EuroPULS launchers, addressing the growing demand for deep strike capabilities in Europe. The initiative is especially aligned with the requirements of the German armed forces, a critical partner in the European defense architecture. The EuroPULS Launcher, which is part of a joint venture between Elbit and KNDS Deutschland, is designed to meet both NATO and European military standards.
