Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times while inventing the light bulb. So, are you really going to give up after just a few setbacks? I know the feeling. When I was developing D60: Done in 60 Minutes, there were countless moments when I questioned whether I could actually complete it. From sleepless nights perfecting each chapter to wondering if anyone would even find it helpful—failure seemed like a constant shadow. But here’s what I learned along the way: Pain is inevitable, but you have the power to choose which pain you’re willing to face. First, there’s the pain of regret—when you look in the mirror and realize you’re not where you want to be. Then, there’s the pain of discipline—putting in the work, failing forward, and getting back up every time. I chose discipline. And I poured everything into D60 to create a framework that would help people like you overcome everyday challenges using Design Thinking principles. It’s a tool I use daily, whether it’s managing work, balancing personal life, or handling unexpected setbacks. So, if Edison could keep going despite thousands of failures, and if I could push through all the self-doubt and struggles to complete D60, then you can do it too. Every day we work, we face challenges. It is never easy. Things rarely go as planned. Reminding yourself why you wake up every day to put in the work is important. These often are personal reasons (provide for your family, elevate your career, etc.). Rightfully so. For me, these personal reasons weren't enough alone to justify the work I was putting in. I knew, in my next role, I wanted my hard work to positively impact the largest issue we face today: climate change. Every day the team at Gridium puts in the hard work. Our hard work leads to lower carbon emissions (and lower energy costs) for our customers. Now, when I have to do something really challenging, I am able to remind myself of the why...For me, taking this step back and reminding myself of the impact we create, is the ultimate motivation to keep going. Each person needs to make their own decisions and I am not judging anyone who is doing what they do for money or their career. These are top motivators for me, but I didn't sacrifice these by working in clean tech. What's your motivation to put in the hard work?

The fastest way to lose focus? Trying to please everyone. Here’s the truth: > Not everyone will understand your journey. > Not everyone will support your choices. And that’s okay. Because the only person who truly needs to be on board? You. > Stay grounded in your vision. > Set boundaries that protect your energy. > Learn to say “no” without guilt. Life’s too short to chase approval from others. Focus on what you want, not what others expect.

It’s easy to get caught up in tasks that feel urgent but don’t move us closer to our true goals. I’ve learned that real progress often comes from focusing on what’s important, even if it’s not pressing in the moment. By carving out time for these priorities, I ensure my energy goes toward long-term growth, not just today’s to-do list. Sometimes, less urgency means more impact.
