What If Thomas Edison Had a Boss Today? Imagine Thomas Edison in the modern workplace, sitting across from a demanding boss during a performance review. "1200 experiments, Edison! What results do you have to show for them?" the boss exclaims, frustration evident. Edison responds, "Each one of those is a step toward success! They bring me closer to a breakthrough." The boss leans in, voice stern. "A breakthrough? This is not a lab for endless trials. We need concrete results." Desperate, Edison pleads, "Just one more chance! I believe this next idea will work!" The boss shakes his head. "You've had enough chances. This isn’t delusion; it’s a lack of progress. You’re fired, Edison." As Edison walks away, the weight of disappointment settles in, a stark reminder of the challenges faced by visionaries in today's fast-paced world. The question is, how many of us have encountered a boss like Mr. X in our careers?

1/ nice illustration- but just for reference Edison's lab in West Orange, New Jersey is a historical site that is open to the public. The view from his lab never looked like the one in this image. 2/ Edison was a serial innovator of many consumer products. Compare that with Westinghouse who was largely focussed on taking other peoples innovations and building them into large scale industrial solutions. Which one would fit better into a modern corporate structure where solution delivery is important? 3/ Edison lost his company by being unable to see the advantages of AC for long distance power distribution- he wasn't really open to assessing whether his iterative experiments were taking him down a dead end. 4/ You could ask a different question- not whether their work style would align with modern management, but given the tremendous egos of both men would you want to work for either Edison or Westinghouse as your manager?
