#30DayMapChallenge DAY 22 - 2 colours. 🌳 Urban Greening: A Hypothetical View 🌳 Today’s map leverages Tree Canopy data from the City of Cape Town Open Data Portal to visualise a hypothetical illustration of tree canopy in the Cape Town City Centre, in the absence of buildings. Using a simple green-and-white scheme for today's challenge, the map highlights the crucial role of urban greening as a climate mitigation strategy. By reducing the urban heat island effect, urban greening helps cities adapt to rising temperatures caused by climate change, creating healthier and more liveable environments. 🌳🌍 Cape Town is home to trees with centuries of history, some of which were introduced by European settlers. Many of these have been designated as 'Champion Trees', protected under the National Forests Act 84 of 1998 due to their cultural and historical significance. Yet, for urban greening to truly thrive as a climate adaptation strategy, it’s essential to prioritise the planting of indigenous trees, which are better suited to local conditions. This approach not only enhances biodiversity but also ensures sustainability amidst a changing climate. Let’s embrace greener, more resilient cities for future generations! 🌱✨ #UrbanGreening #ClimateAction #SustainableCities #TreeCanopy #Biodiversity #GreenCities #ClimateAdaptation #ChampionTrees
