Each year our nearly one million visitors experience a growing number of free and engaging public art exhibitions on Governors Island. A highlight from this past year: artist and activist Jenny Kendler’s “Other of Pearl,” the grand yet delicate exhibition presented by #GovIslandArts and Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) that explored human relationships with the natural world through the lens of oysters and whales. We also hosted the second annual INTERVENTIONS performance series that highlighted acclaimed artists from around the world, and more than 20 nonprofit Organizations in Residence in the Island’s historic houses. THANK YOU for visiting, supporting, and engaging with Governors Island Arts this season. Visit govisland.org/donate today to support our arts programs with a donation, and stay tuned for an exciting 2025 season! 📸 clockwise from left: “Cabin,” Rachel Whiteread (Julienne Schaer), “Church,” Shantell Martin (Timothy Schenck), “Bird MMXXIII,” Sheila Berger (Cirsty Burton), “Not for Nutten,” Duke Riley; “The Open Orchard,” Sam Van Aken; and “Whale Bells” as featured in “Other of Pearl,” Jenny Kendler and Andrew Bearnot (Timothy Schenck)

Hoa, São Paulo’s first Black-owned gallery, reforms as a non-profit. With the need to address inequality within the industry on a “more impactful” level, founder Igi Lola Ayedun launched the Hoa Cultural Society, a residency programme that soon became the city’s first Black-owned gallery. Dedicated to non-white artists and the Global South, Hoa has quickly garnered an international platform and helped to launch the careers of a new artist cohort better representative of Brazil’s racial diversity. 📷: The Art Newspaper #Artgallery #Blackowned #SãoPauloart #Art

3 Reasons You Should Submit to Art Open Calls 1. Increases your Audience: Open calls often have specific themes, locations, or target audiences that might differ from an artist's usual sphere of influence. 2. Networking Opportunities: Meeting other artists and art professionals can help build valuable connections and foster a supportive network. 3. Professional Development: The process of preparing and submitting work for consideration helps artists refine their portfolios and presentation skills. https://lnkd.in/eqEJk6Dx #art #artist #opencall #nonprofit

I appreciate Alex Freeman for sharing this article about the history of non-profits arts funding. https://lnkd.in/g6sdFuD7 The funding of non-profit performing arts continues to be a challenge across the US, precisely because of the spectrum of attitudes towards the arts, "declining leisure time, slippage in middle class prosperity, and the constant pressure of new entertainment technologies..." Not to mention, it is convenient to travel to other arts destinations like New York, Santa Fe, etc--places where the communities have invested heavily into their arts identity. In most US cities and communities, we are less that one generation from seeing our cultural, visual, and performing arts disappear. You see this in the ethnic European cultural arts first. Many communities have lost their cultural identity due to lack of interest, lack of participation, or replacement by something more contemporary--like sports or competitive dance culture. The entities that continue to thrive are those who established endowments to carry them through difficult times and that have individuals and groups that are dedicated to promoting and presenting the arts.

Happy Today, Happy Everyday. 124 years ago in Paris the Olympic Games had 2.2% female athletes participating and Paris Olympics 2024 has 50% female participation. As mothers, monthly period experiencing, and socialized to not be competitive, because competition is a male characteristic, humans are born with feminine and masculine characteristics. Without just kudos to tampons, go females for finally now wanting to be 50 50 in competition. Competition is one of 5 social interactions. As soon as us females want to get 50 50 on conflict, coercion, and commerce, the impacts we already made in cooperation/collaboration will demonstrate enhanced ways in conflict, coercion, and commerce. Happy Today all females whether spawned offspring or not, whatever we have done, most all of us have done bleeding monthly for 30-50 years. Thank you to the direct donors for Sports Herstory movement and this link is for the distant donors who have yet to help. Proves “in person” is the richest channel of communication 🤓 To enlightenment and love! ENLITEN https://lnkd.in/giTAwRvy

Greetings, supporters of the cosmos! I am a dedicated researcher with a dream to unravel the mysteries of the Universe through my PhD studies in Astronomy and Cosmology. As part of my journey, I am also working on an innovative 3D printed telescope project that will enhance my research capabilities. This telescope project, with a cost of less than R2000, showcases efficient and groundbreaking technology. However, pursuing a PhD entails substantial expenses, including tuition, research materials, and living costs. For the entirety of my four-year program, and the production of a substantial number of telescope and accompanying learning material the estimated cost is approximately R786,000. How Your Contribution Helps: Tuition Fees: Ensuring I have access to world-class education and resources. Research Expenses: Covering advanced telescopic observations, data analysis tools, and materials. Living Costs: Supporting day-to-day expenses so I can focus entirely on my research. By supporting me, you are not only investing in the advancement of scientific knowledge but also fueling discoveries that could reshape our understanding of the cosmos. Your generous contributions will directly support my academic pursuits, making groundbreaking research possible. How You Can Help: Donate: Any amount, big or small, brings us closer to new cosmic discoveries. Share: Spread the word about this campaign to your network. Join me on this stargazer's journey, and together, let's reach for the stars! Thank you for your support! Neo Namane

T H I N K I N G A L O U D: An Obligation to Engage? In the early 1980’s AIGA / Chicago produced a panel discussion at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Accomplished design professionals and educators discuss whether or not designers have an obligation to act as a public conscience. Panelists were: Rick Valicenti, Dietmar Winkler, Katherine McCoy, Bob Vogele and moderated by Joseph Michael Essex. The discussion was quite wide-ranging. The panel addressed, educational, sociological, cultural, environmental and political issues, both local and Presidential. Several members of the panel were quite adamant and articulate when suggesting designers possess, by discipline, a particular set of skills capable of presenting complex concepts clearly, making those concepts understandable to almost everyone. Others on the panel (and in the audience of 250+) had other thoughts. This video tape is only one of many such items. Next Spring the Chicago Design Archives will host a fundraising event where hundreds of donated posters and publications as well as art and artifacts will be auctioned; raising funds to support an expansion of CDA. Other activities are anticipated; community building and educational. These initiatives are designed to help strengthen and sustain the Archives for the next generation. Information about donating items, participating and volunteering for the auction will be available after the first of the next year. Say Something, Do Something.

"Public Art in Review; Volume 1" by UAP | Art in public spaces plays a distinguishing role in our country’s history and culture. It reflects and reveals our society, enhances meaning in our civic spaces, and adds uniqueness to our communities. Public art humanizes the built environment. It provides an intersection between past, present, and future; between disciplines and ideas.
We are thrilled to announce the launch of Public Art in Review, Volume 1 (2019-2023.) Public Art in Review is not just a book; it's a unique journey through the world of public art. It's the culmination of years of celebration and exploration of excellence in public art, offering an engaging and accessible overview of this dynamic field. 5 years, 27 curators and over 58 artists and collectives. The book captures the past five years of the Best of Public Art initiative, supported by Artsy. Each book section will include a brief overview of the individual works reviewed by each curator, covering their origins, conceptual concerns, and public reception. Select members of the curatorium will also provide feature essays and interviews that will further elaborate on unique viewpoints and experiences, reflecting important themes and trends that have emerged through these commissioned artworks. Proceeds from book sales will be donated to non-profit organizations focusing on curatorial and arts advocacy: ICI (Independent Curators International) and National Association for the Visual Arts Order your copy now! https://lnkd.in/dnsjD3bu #PublicArt #ArtBook #PublicArtinReview #ArtInReview #PreOrderNow #ThoughtLeadership

𝐈𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? As a scientist, entrepreneur, and creative innovator, I’ve always been drawn to the intersection of art and science. 👩🎨 👩🔬 For the longest time, I thought the two couldn’t mix. But a few years ago, I leaned into my creative side by dancing, writing, and performing poetry—and it changed everything. I’ve found that art helps me think differently, especially when I’m tackling complex challenges. It opens up new perspectives, sparks creative ideas, and reminds me to look beyond the data to find fresh solutions. At this time of year, while many are immersed in family gatherings or the bustle of shopping, I find joy in escaping to quieter art exhibitions. London, being the vibrant city it is, offers so many treasures, and I feel utterly spoilt for choice! 🤩 Two standout exhibitions I highly recommend before they close: ✨ Entheon by Illusionaries at Canary Wharf (until 31 Dec) - see video An immersive psychedelic visual journey exploring consciousness, perception, and the human spirit. ✨ Zanele Muholi at Tate Modern (until 26 Jan) A thought-provoking photographic exhibition spotlighting LGBTQI communities in South Africa. 𝑰’𝒎 𝒂𝒍𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒖𝒏𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒉 𝒆𝒙𝒉𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒓 𝒉𝒊𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒏 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒕𝒔 𝒊𝒏/𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏. 𝑨𝒏𝒚 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔? Drop them in the comments—I’d love to hear! 🎨 💡 Top tip for fellow art lovers who are UK tax payers: Most museums and galleries in the UK are registered charities. By signing up for membership and adding gift aid, you’re making a charitable donation, gaining tax-deductible benefits, and only need to visit a few times to make it worth it. A true win-win!
