It’s the MOST w̶o̶n̶d̶e̶r̶f̶u̶l̶ expensive ti(iii)me of the year. Perhaps unsurprising that direct debits in the UK fail at a consistently higher rate in January than any other month (source: ONS). Reducing cost is of course a welcome relief to anyone at 𝘢𝘯𝘺 time though – whether that’s saving pennies on sleigh top-ups for our rotund, rosy-cheeked, reindeer chauffeur, or simply paying your payments provider. Pay with Bank transfer, powered by American Express, allows an express check-out for customers at a low cost to merchants. The Payments Service Regulator is planning a cap on cross-border card fees. The current rates post-Brexit cost businesses £150-200 million extra per year, as reported in Finextra. Our co-founder and CEO, Laurent Descout believes that these cross-border fees and supply chain disruptions have negatively impacted UK businesses post-Brexit. While it is encouraging that the PSR recognises the problem and is looking to introduce a price cap to protect UK businesses, more must be done to protect SMEs in an already challenging economy. Without a permanent regulatory solution, their bottom lines could be at risk.
