The Role of Paving in Oil and Gas Projects: Building a Foundation for Success In oil and gas projects, the importance of paving is often overlooked, yet it plays a crucial role in ensuring the functionality, safety, and longevity of infrastructure. From access roads to heavy equipment areas, well-executed paving work is essential for smooth operations in these demanding environments. 🔹 What is Paving in Oil and Gas Projects? Paving involves creating durable surfaces, such as roads, platforms, and foundations, tailored to the unique requirements of oil and gas facilities. These areas must withstand heavy loads, harsh weather conditions, and chemical exposure, making quality paving an integral part of project execution. 🔹 Key Applications of Paving in Oil and Gas: Access Roads: Facilitating the movement of personnel, machinery, and materials to remote sites. Equipment Foundations: Providing stable surfaces for critical equipment like pumps, compressors, and drilling rigs. Tank Pads and Storage Areas: Ensuring a leveled and secure base for storage tanks and other heavy structures. Drainage Systems: Incorporating sloping and surface treatments to manage water flow and prevent flooding. 🔹 Challenges in Paving for Oil and Gas Projects: Load-Bearing Requirements: Paved areas must handle the weight of heavy machinery and vehicles. Environmental Conditions: Projects often occur in extreme climates, requiring materials that withstand temperature fluctuations, corrosion, and erosion. Precision and Timing: Paving must align with the overall project schedule to avoid delays in subsequent activities. 🔹 Best Practices for Successful Paving: Thorough Planning: Conduct soil tests and geotechnical surveys to design paving solutions tailored to site conditions. Material Selection: Use high-quality materials like reinforced concrete or asphalt mixes designed for industrial use. Compliance with Standards: Adhere to safety and environmental regulations, ensuring durability and sustainability. Coordination with Stakeholders: Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and contractors to align paving with project milestones. 🔹 Why It Matters: In my experience working on mega oil and gas projects, such as AHC, paving has been critical to maintaining smooth operations and reducing long-term maintenance costs. A well-paved infrastructure doesn’t just support operations—it enhances safety, boosts efficiency, and sets the stage for successful project delivery. 💡 Investing in quality paving upfront saves time and resources in the long run, ensuring oil and gas facilities can operate reliably under the most demanding conditions. Natural gas pipeline refers to the pipeline that transports natural gas (including associated gas produced in oil field) from the production site or treatment plant to urban gas distribution center or industrial enterprise users, also known as gas transmission pipeline. Using natural gas pipeline to transport natural gas is a way to transport natural gas on land. Natural gas pipelines account for about half of the world's total pipelines. Common Safety Problems In the construction process of general natural gas pipeline, there are some safety problems in environment, construction and management, and these three potential safety hazards will be explained in detail. 1. Environmental factors The main potential safety hazard in the environment comes from the destruction of soil structure caused by the excavation of pipelines, which leads to a higher degree of soil looseness. In addition, the stacking of solid waste at the construction site, the noise in the construction process, the emission of harmful gases and so on. If bad weather or natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, debris flows, are encountered in the construction process, it will cause secondary damage to the already fragile soil, and will increase the difficulty of construction, threatening the personal safety of construction personnel. 2. Construction factors The state has formulated a set of relatively perfect construction standards for natural gas pipeline engineering, which involves specific construction technology, construction technology, operation process, etc. It can be used as a reference basis for each construction unit in the actual construction process, and can effectively ensure that the potential safety hazards are minimized. However, many enterprises fail to clarify these indicators to technicians in the construction process, resulting in frequent irregular construction, or lack of comprehensive consideration of the overall project, resulting in omissions on some details, which will bring some potential safety hazards to the follow-up construction process. 3. Management factors According to the survey, more than half of natural gas pipeline accidents are caused by poor management in the construction process. The level of management has a direct relationship with the quality of the project, and directly determines the safety factor of the construction site. Management involves all aspects of construction, from the management of construction materials, machinery and equipment to the management of construction personnel, we should pay more attention. If any one of the management is not in place, it may lead to safety problems on the construction site, especially the electricity problem on the construction site, which is closely related to the personal safety of the site personnel. It is a arduous and complicated task to manage all the elements in the whole process of natural gas pipeline construction.

Englobe UK Senior Management Team are hands on and proactive in visiting our sites, projects, and soil treatment facilities to support colleagues and the work in progress. Our commitment to safe working procedures and the welfare of our staff are paramount. At this site near Cheltenham Englobe UK were commissioned as the Design and Build Contractor to implement ground contamination remediation works at this former #Gasworks. Various phases of investigations and demolition works had been undertaken at the site and contamination was present along with remnant in-ground foundations/obstructions associated with former gasholders and infrastructure. Based on the remediation options appraisal and assessment of all available historic site investigation data, Englobe UK determined the Best Practicable Technique for the remediation to render the site suitable for a commercial/open storage end use. To facilitate these works, wider works including service disconnection (gas, electric and telecoms), ecological assessments, bat emergence surveying, bat box placement under license, building asbestos removal (licensed) and historic building demolition were required. These were all done on a highly constrained site with 2 separate site tenants and live equipment (Gas Governor, Telecoms databanks) and required detailed and proactive stakeholder engagement. #EnglobeUK #Englobe #ExcellentPeople #GreatPlaceTowork #ProudOfOurWork #WaterTreatmentServices #Remediation #RemediationContractor #SoilTreatmentFacilities #BrownfieldContracting #EnablingWorks #IntegratedEnvironmentalServices #InfrastructureProjects #CivilEngineering #HealthandSafety
