Your Skirt, My Choice. Forever. I had to report for Jury Duty today. I spent an inordinate amount of time on the website of the court system in Philadelphia trying to find out exactly which door I was supposed to use to enter a building that takes up an entire city block. Just out of curiosity I clicked on a few of the available links, one of which was ‘What can I wear to Jury Duty?’ What on earth does one say about that in 2024? Well, a lot it seems: 1.      Jeans are ok, but only if they are not ripped 2.      No hats. Definitely no hats 3.      No clothing with political or social statements 4.      Men were advised that slacks and a polo shirt was a good choice 5.      Women were advised that slacks and sweater set was a good choice Obviously this content hasn’t been updated since 1990. Or was it 1890, because: 1.      Women were also instructed to not dress ‘provocatively’. 2.      Women were advised that they could wear a skirt as long as the hem of the skirt was below their fingertips. I found myself wondering why men were not advised to not wear shorts – for many women have made a bad decision when provoked by a couple of nice knees. This is what I am talking about when I talk about systemic misogyny. These are the messages our society throws at us dozens of times a week.  They are so insignificant that you don’t even see them (Unless you are a systemic misogyny warrior like myself). Is it any wonder that Trump is going to protect women “whether they want it or not”? Is it any wonder that “Your body, my choice” has become a meme men can use to celebrate their control over women?

When we go to the supermarket or drugstore, we head to the women's products aisle, grab what we need, and go. That's probably also how you shop. Why wouldn't you? If you took a little extra time and compared prices in the men's products aisle against your products you might be... displeased. On average, women's products and services are 7% more expensive than the male equivalent. That's right - we're spending hundreds, sometimes thousands more than men every year for the same goods and services! This is the "Pink Tax." The Pink Tax is where companies charge more for women's products (traditionally marketed in pink packaging) or services marketed to women. - Women pay 15% more for a shirt to be dry-cleaned than men - 53% of women were charged more for a mortgage loan than men - Women’s underwear is 27% more expensive than men’s underwear The world would be better off if companies paid less attention to their packaging and more attention to making their products better for the women buying them. Just kidding...these are very illegal to carry unless according to UK Law you have ‘good reason’. 💦 Pepper Spray - +32% this month, +13% this week – Not at all legal if you are based in the UK but there are some good alternatives like FARB-GEL-SPRAY or NOYZIE that will keep her safe and on the right side of the law. 🎥 Home Security Camera - +81% this month, +38% this week – By far the least dangerous item on this list but certainly the most sensible and according to the UK Gov significantly reduces the risk of being attacked in your home. In all seriousness, none of these gifts – except perhaps the home security camera – are particularly realistic (or festive for that matter). However, seeing these and so many similar search terms rise in demand this month – coinciding with the result of the US election and the potential impact on women’s (and many others) rights this could have as well as other world events like the potential reduction of the age of consent in Iraq, and the ban on women raising their voices in Afghanistan – it seems to me that now more than ever may be a time to consider how people in your life are feeling about their safety and more importantly what you can do to support them...

I Dyed my Hair but didn't Last 30 Days because of This I had been wanting to dye my hair for months, but every time I made up my mind, I hesitated. Society’s judgment always loomed large, especially where dyed hair is often seen as a symbol of rebellion or thuggery. One day, I finally went for it—I dyed my hair gold. I already knew what people might think of me, living in a society where appearances are harshly judged. “Alfa, you shouldn’t be doing this” A typical comment I kept on my mind. After editing my usual videos with my new look, the feedback poured in. The focus wasn’t on my content but my hair. Friends called, some complimented it, while others chose to stay silent. I didn’t hear anything from my family, but I knew they were waiting for me to come home to express their thoughts in person. When it was time to return to school for my final year clearance, I dyed my hair back to black to avoid unnecessary drama. Since then, I’ve never dared to try it again. It’s frustrating how our society makes personal choices seem like crimes. This judgment isn’t limited to dyed hair; it’s the same way people wearing black shades or stylish outfits are labeled, or how every successful young man is assumed to be a fraudster. There are countless Nigerians who want to express themselves through fashion but are held back by the fear of "what people will say."
