It’s hard to believe that in 2024, we’re still using grading practices that punish students in ways that have nothing to do with learning. Take the common practice of assigning a 0 for missing work: a student who doesn’t turn in one 100-point assignment receives a grade that’s essentially double an F, digging a hole so deep they may never climb out. For many, this leads to frustration, disengagement, and ultimately dropping out—outcomes that disproportionately impact our most vulnerable students. This is why conversations about equitable grading practices and mastery grading matter so much. These strategies aren’t just about fairness; they’re about giving every student the chance to succeed and ensuring that grades reflect what students know and can do. I encourage anyone invested in education to join this critical conversation. The webinar “Equitable Grading: A Competency-Based Education Entry Point and Core Practice” hosted by the Aurora Institute on 12/17 at 3 PM EST promises to challenge outdated norms and offer transformative solutions. #EquitableGrading #CompetencyBasedEducation #EquityInEducation #edtech
