Hey folks, today I'm going to talk about investing in deep tech startups and what we like about deep tech. This video is going to be in two parts. This part is an overview and Part 2 of the video is going to be released in a few days and I'll begin to into a lot more detail on the challenges of investing in deep tech and how we look at risk at different stages of a deep tech startups journey. For now, I just want to outline what we mean by deep tech and what's interesting about this category from an investor point of view. So if we want to define deep tech, the term has been popular for about the last five years and Hello Tomorrow, in partnership with BCG defines it in this way. You don't need to need me to read it out for you. But if we if we contrast deep tech with just plain tech, typically it's tied to substantial R&D, can be fairly capital intensive and risky, but it can have major, major impact both on a societal level and in changing industries. So some examples of of deep tech and all of these are characterized by innovation that's backed by strong intellectual property typically comes out of research rather than iterating off of an MVP that you can throw together in a three-week Sprint like a lot of SAS startups. Not that there's anything wrong with that. So artificial intelligence core, like real artificial intelligence. What I'm talking about is core. I like breakthroughs and new methods and technologies rather than just training an existing platform on your data or repping a UI around chat TBT in in artificial intelligence. If you don't have a PhD working on your AI startup, then maybe it's not in the deep tech category. New materials I talked about in the last video. Robotics is another example of deep tech novel energy. Both. Noble Energy storage and Noble Energy generation technologies. Quantum computing is in as far as new computing methods is example of deep tech and biotech. There's a whole kind of range of biotech and medtech that that is backed by deep research and almost like pharmaceutical in terms of the the long development cycles and capital needed. So first, why a lot of people chose the, the tech industry in the 1st place is, is we want to solve problems in the world and we think technology is a good solution to problems. So, so one of the reasons that, that, that, that, that I'm doing what I do instead of working for a big corporation is getting get involved in these things and some of these big bets using technology to solve world problems. IP with deep tech IP itself is an asset, it's competitive advantage. It can create a. Competitive mode, but it's also a like a more fungible asset that the patents can be sold or licensed. So there's some, there's some like real value that you can put and, and there's, there's even companies that could put, could underwrite loans based on the value of, of a patent. The cycles of deep tech are different than for other investment categories. So if you're investing across a whole range of, of asset classes, then deep tech is uncorrelated, fairly uncorrelated. With other asset classes. So it gives some, some diversification advantage and then for strategic investors gives a competitive advantage in early seat at the table. Whether that's strategic is a family office that has a business or, or a corporation that may be a corporate VC investing early in deep tech before they're able to even commercialize it. But that gives them a seat at the table to either learn or, or or get some skin in the game. So here's something interesting. Um, McKinsey looked at precinct data and found that the, and this was this, this was just this report came out in May that the median IRR of a deep tech fund is around 16 to 17%. And this varies a little bit based on geography compared to around 10% for a normal VC fund. So the, the median IRR's are, are, are quite strong for deep tech funds. There's obviously a distribution with that. There's, there's other data. That shows that the timeline to exit for a deep tech startup, even though the timeline to commercialization is a long time. Timeline to exit is not that much different than other categories in high tech like SAS or computer hardware. So thanks for watching Part 1. It’s been nearly four months since Jack Foster and I launched Tensora. It’s hard to believe how quickly time has passed. In this startup, operating in a 24/7 market makes days and nights blend together. We’ve experienced everything you would expect, but momentum is definitely building. We’re finding our groove in the Bittensor ecosystem which is expanding as I type.
