National Skills Coalition has released a new brief, "What Students Want: Students’ Experiences and the Implications of Enhanced Holistic Supports for Non-Degree Pathways." Thank you to Michael Richardson, Karina Paredes-Arzola, Kate Michaels, and Lindsey Reichlin Cruse for their efforts and hard work on this brief. Additionally, the Voices for Skills network played an integral role in supporting these efforts. With the brief highlighting our Student Advisory Council's voices, we were able to gather insights from real life students and workers on the growing importance of holistic supports—meaning services, resources, and assistance that help people meet their basic needs, like food, housing, and childcare—and non-degree credentials that provide valuable skills and qualifications outside of traditional degree programs. Download and share the brief here: https://lnkd.in/et3rKFKe

This month marks the 17th anniversary of our John Hancock MLK Scholars Program, and we’re excited to welcome another outstanding group of 22 young Boston-area adults into the program. Participants, 16-18 years old, will spend their summer with us tackling meaningful job experiences right here in our corporate offices and in other community-based organizations in the city. Since its inception in 2008, our MLK Scholars Program has invested more than $16 million to provide 6,000 young adults with meaningful job experiences. One of the primary goals of the program is to level the playing field for young people who don’t have equal access to the work experiences and networks that are key to building long-term skills, self-confidence, and financial empowerment. The program provides guidance on career readiness and financial literacy to help participants grow as leaders in the office, the classroom, and the greater community. The program also benefits local nonprofit organizations that employ MLK Scholars, providing them with an opportunity to engage Boston’s diverse student population in potential career paths in their industries – with some students even returning as college interns and full-time hires after college. As we welcome another group of outstanding students this year, I can’t help but think of a quote from our program’s namesake, who once said, “the function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.

We're highlighting another wonderful CSU Global community member! Meet Carol, a driven graduate who earned her B.S. in Accounting! Balancing family and career while pursuing her degree was no small task, but Carol's determination paved the way for her success. Here's how she did it: ➡ Dedicated study time: Carol scheduled 3-4 focused study hours every night, minimizing distractions by silencing her phone. ➡ Strategic prioritization: She tackled assignments with the earliest deadlines first, avoiding last-minute rushes. ➡ Adaptability: When unexpected challenges arose, Carol proactively sought extensions without hesitation. "My advice for others is to take it step by step, manage your time wisely, and remember to take breaks," Carol advises. "Utilize the university's resources fully, ask questions, avoid overloading yourself, and embrace new learning methods. Stay focused, be realistic, and practice patience." Congratulations, Carol, on your achievement! We're honored to have you as part of the CSU Global community! #csuglobal #onlinestudent #onlinelearning #accountingdegree #worklifebalance

So much negative news came out of the Dutch Quarter community recently. It pained me as an educator who lived in the community and knew exactly what that community can produce. We started our GED program in that community and remained there when others were asking "Why are you guys giving classes there?" We answered that we needed to be in the community that needed us! We gave classes in the evenings with classes ending at 10 pm nightly- not one time being fearful. Through all of the negativity leveled at that community, Mr. Ashton Adams, a young firefighter and resident of Dutch Quarter earned his GED diploma on August 8th, 2024 - just 4 days after "riots" broke out in the area. Ashton did his GED courses, along with other education courses, while juggling work and life. Even when it got harder, Ashton never complained. Instead, he found the time to do extra practice while we worked to fine-tune his skills. This led to his success in the end. Aston stated: "I decided to start my GED because one day I was at home sitting and I thought to myself 'I need to do more to further my education because you never know where you are going to be in the next 5 years.' With the different courses that I was doing, there were times when I wanted to take a break. But with the motivation from Dr. Boston, I got it done. She knew how badly I wanted it. So she gave me the motivation to continue pushing myself. I dedicated at least an hour a day to work on my assignments to get it done. It wasn’t easy but when you want to get something done you will make time and effort to get it done." Inspiring testimonies like Ashton's are to be shared to bring hope and motivation, to all our young people - especially our young men. These testimonies show that our future is still hopeful. Our students are still striving to be their best. Even when their communities are painted negatively, our young people are working to change the narrative. It is an uphill battle that they are willing to take!! Congratulations to Ashton Adams. We wish you well in your future endeavors. #sxm #adulteducation #GED

💡 CPD at SNC this week 📆 This week, we’re running the Early Careers Teacher strand of our CPD programme at Suffolk New College led by Jayne Double our Course Leader for ITE. ➡️ It’s all about giving teachers the support they need after their initial training to help them build confidence and succeed in the classroom. ❓Did you know that around 1 in 3 new teachers leave the profession within their first five years? That’s a huge challenge for education, and it’s why contact like this is so important. Supporting teachers early on doesn’t just help them—it strengthens the whole profession. 💭 But it’s got us thinking: what else can we do to make sure new teachers feel supported and stay in the profession? ➡️ We’d love to hear your thoughts—what’s worked for you or your team? #SupportingTeachers #CPD #EarlyCareers #Education
