Had a fun this past weekend in northern Italy doing a quick down-and-dirty LiDAR scan for an architectural design and permaculture project of a callabente in the Alps. This scan was made with my iPhone in ~10minutes just to have digital measurements to reconstruct some rudementary floor plans - as the archives have some wonderfully vague details of the structure and we wanted to have a secondary input to hand measuring by laser. We will be returning in the spring for a week or so and will make a much more comprehensive set of scans both by hand-held and drone surveying. Super excited to do a bit of a dive to compare #LiDAR, #Photogrammetry, and #GaussianSplats for digital reconstruction. Additionally, I'm quite excited about some #OpenSource software i've found for direct GS-to-mesh workflows that provide some super detailed outputs. Ideally, these methods will offer a quick method for GS-to-subd surfaces for editing - particularly for planning earthworks, terracing, and other landscape arch/regenerative agricultural elements to the surrounding 3 acre property. But on a purely aesthetic level, and since this is also a #regenerative ag meets architecture project, I just love how adding clipping planes on a scan like this enable a ct scan like effect for a building... conceptually it really helps blend the space between what is coined 'structural biology' and what is conventionally thought of as architecture. #architecture #landscapearchitecture #permaculture #rhino3d #surveying
