Are you shutting out people who want to meet and connect with you? Do you ever come away from an event feeling as if you didn't meet enough people or have enough valuable conversations, even though you spent money on booth space? There's good and bad events - but with any group of people, it's about what you bring to the short moments you might have to connect with them. I go to expos and trade shows all the time, and I am always interested to see how folks on the booths present themselves. In my view, having a presence at a show like this - big or small - is a golden moment when just the client you've been waiting for might wander over to find out about you at any moment. If they do (and I recognise it's a big "if" sometimes), how would you like them to find you? Stood smiling ready to shake their hand, or absorbed in your laptop? All too often I see folks sat buried in work as if they're hiding from the oncoming crowds. Avid networker and thick-skinned thing that I am, I'll still be happy to politely ask if they're free to talk if I am interested in the company - but others might assume you are unavailable and, in the words of Burt Bacharach, walk on by. First off, standing gives you a different energy and even tone of voice, making you feel and come across as active and ready to engage. It means you are higher and have a better view of the show floor, allowing you to make eye contact with people as they mosey past and strike up a conversation (and it's always good to have a few conversation starters in your pocket too - that ideally don't start with "would you like to take a look at our [product or service]?") Secondly, the moment you set up your booth and lay out your brochures and gifts, you are both open for business and potentially in (friendly) competition with other exhibitors. Don't you want to be the most magnetic, the most welcoming, the most approachable company there? People buy from people, and they're more likely to talk to and remember you if you are actively engaged and actively listening. Take it from me that if you make an effort to give that person your full attention and be more interested in their business objectives and challenges than any of the stuff you brought to the booth to give away, you are more likely to get the next steps into a mutually rewarding business partnership. Give it a go next time you're at an event! Set your laptop aside for when you have a chance to walk somebody through that presentation or demo you've got ready, and use your valuable time at the event making the most of every connection you have. #events #connections #relationshipbuilding #networking
