🎨 Back to Basics: The Power of Colormap Choices in Geospatial Analysis As a geospatial analyst, it's easy to get swept up in the excitement of AI models, complex algorithms, and cutting-edge tools. But every now and then, it's worth taking a step back to revisit the fundamentals that ground our work. Take this image as an example—it's the Normalized Difference Built-Up Index (NDBI) for the Amsterdam area, derived from Sentinel-2 imagery. The analysis itself is straightforward: highlighting urbanized regions to understand land-use patterns. But here’s the catch—all these visualizations show the exact same data. What changes? The colormap. Each color scheme tells a slightly different story: - Bright contrasts can make patterns pop for presentations. - Subtle gradients help with detailed analysis. - Unusual color combinations might obscure or highlight specific trends depending on the viewer's perception. This simple exercise is a great reminder that how we visualize data is as critical as the analysis itself. A well-chosen colormap can guide interpretation, influence decision-making, and communicate insights more effectively. In a world where we often jump to complex models, sometimes the biggest impact comes from fine-tuning the basics. 💡 So, the next time you create a map, ask yourself: Is my colormap working for me—or against me? #GeospatialAnalysis #DataVisualization #Sentinel2 #ColormapMatters #GIS #MonitoredAI #GeospatialPlatform Contains imagery provided by Copernicus Sentinel-2 Created with MONITORED AI - platform developed by OPT/NET BV
