Inspiring roundtable after presenting the AI Continent Action Plan yesterday. The Action Plan adopted prioritises five key areas for the EU to truly become an AI Continent. It builds a distinctly European approach to AI, trustworthy and human-centric, and establishes the infrastructure needed for researchers and SMEs to develop and use AI through a network of AI Factories. The plan also launches two public consultations on Apply AI and the AI Cloud and Development Act, as well as a call for expressions of interest for the creation of AI Gigafactories. Together with 🇪🇺 Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva, we met with representatives of AI Factories and European AI start-ups for a discussion on innovation in the AI ecosystem. We’re investing in a strong network of public AI Factories to provide computing power to SMEs, researchers, and start-ups, crucial for training and fine-tuning AI models. These factories will also become hubs for talent, research, and innovation. We’re also working closely with start-ups to support them in navigating the AI Act, fostering AI adoption across sectors, and providing the business guidance they need to scale and succeed globally. As a top 5 biotech & ai founder in Europe, and having been responsible for parts of Google ML infra, i find it odd and disturbing the focus in ML is so much on the AI factories. This is mostly the old wine of EuroHPC crew trying to make very inflexible supercomputers usable for AI training. Most scale ups avoid it as they are not built for purpose and clouds work pretty well. These are mostly mainframes built for physics et all simulation, not infrastructure to build a company on.
