The Phoenix Rises: Team Tsuchiya’s Comeback in Super GT - https://lnkd.in/gJCtzDFw SHIZUOKA, May 09 (News On Japan) - During the second round of the Super GT at Fuji Speedway on May 4th, Tsuchiya Takeshi, director of the "Hoppy Team Tsuchiya," set a simple yet profound goal before the staff: "First and foremost, our goal is to take the chequered flag. That's my primary goal, to do it in front of everyone here." About six weeks prior to this day, on March 24th, the team was at Fuji Speedway for the pre-season official test. The team's car, still not fully painted, was wrapped in a stark black body. Despite the pouring rain, Tsuchiya watched over the black car completing laps like a parent watching over a child. "This really feels like the first real shake-down. Being here, able to do this, feels incredibly fortunate," he said. In the frantic rush to develop and set up the car just before the season opener, being at the track felt like a blessing. Aiming for victory yet setting the primary goal of merely taking the chequered flag highlights the trials the team has faced. Located in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture, "Hoppy Team Tsuchiya's" base, Tsuchiya Engineering, was founded in 1971 by Tsuchiya Takeshi's father, Haruo. It has been a small town factory team, known as a "fighting privateer," building cars independently of major automotive manufacturers and winning races with craftsman skills and ingenuity for over 50 years. Taking over the team founded by his father, the second-generation director, Tsuchiya Takeshi, has continued the legacy. The team's car, nicknamed "Hopi-ko" after the main sponsor's name, has been a beloved figure among fans. However, on August 6th last year, during the fourth round of the Super GT at Fuji Speedway, Tsuchiya witnessed a sight he wished he hadn't: "On August 6th, it's etched in my mind – during the middle of the race, an exhaust problem led to the car catching fire and burning completely. It was like a nightmare." The car was engulfed in flames and smoke, completely burned down. The team was forced to withdraw from racing for the rest of the season as there were no funds left to prepare a new car. Was this the limit for a privateer team? What saved Tsuchiya from this dark time was the voice of fans hoping for "Hopi-ko's" revival. "On social media, so many fans were saying 'don't give up.' Being so wanted by so many people, the only thing I can do is to move forward." Spurred by fans, Tsuchiya launched the "Hopi-ko Revival Project." Approximately 30 million yen in support was gathered from enthusiastic fans and stakeholders. By September, there was a glimpse of light for the team. "First, we'll respond to everyone's feelings. We'll revive this car and get it back on the race track." The race covers 100 km, around one-third of a Grand Prix distance, lasting approximately 30 minutes. There are no mandatory pit stops; the race is designed to be a flat-out, dynamic race without tyre management. They are typically held at circuits with high overtaking potential, encouraging close racing. Points are awarded from 8 for 1st place to 1 for 8th, incentivising aggressive racing. Race Weekend Schedule: Friday: A traditional qualifying session, usually referred to as Sprint Qualifying, sets the grid for Saturday's sprint. Saturday: The results of the Sprint Race determine the grid positions for Sunday's Grand Prix. Sunday: The Grand Prix race follows the traditional format and points system. The Sprint format encourages more overtaking and flat-out racing without tyre and fuel conservation. Teams must balance earning points on Saturday with car preservation for Sunday's race. Mishaps in the Sprint can impact grid positions and car availability for the main race. Fans enjoy the added day of competitive racing. Initially trialled on select weekends, it has extended due to popularity, enriching the F1 calendar and attracting newer audiences. F1 Sprint Races blends traditional racing with modern excitement, adding layers to strategy and spectacle while appealing to a broader fan base. If the "race leader" has control of the field, AND the green flag / light / condition is based on his "accelerating smoothly to race speed" after maintaining pace car speed ... Yellow '!!!-{( " A complete review of the TV coverage has been made and the following timeline has been noted (as supplied by Peacock video timer H:MM:SS) 2:16:09 YELLOW Lights are on as cars are rolling through T4. 2:16:12 RACE Leader has control of the "RE-START" and is maintaining speed, not accelerating and planning his move to take the field back to racing. BUT, unbeknownst to the race leader, the GREEN Light is ON!!!!!!! 2:16:13 RACE Leader, still thinks he has control of the "RE-START", all the while, the following Shite is going down: Car#10 responds to the GREEN Light being ON and makes a move to the inside around Car#8. Car#7 climbs over Car#12 , more than likely noticing ... "Hey, the green Light is on, lets go racing '!-{)". 2:16:14 RACE Leader (Car#2) is still under the impression, that he is controlling the pace of the "RE-START", planning his move and waiting for "his" moment to take the field back to "Racing." All the while, it's getting really ugly behind Car#26 ... BECAUSE; #IndyCar Race Control, "RE-STARTED" the race and didn't bother to tell the "Race Leader" ... BRSCC ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF NEW BMW SUPERCUP CHAMPIONSHIP Ahead of the 2025 race season, the British Racing & Sports Car Club is delighted to announce the BMW SuperCup Championship, a merger of the BMW Compact Cup and BMW 1 Series SuperCup. The BMW Compact Cup has enjoyed a long and successful history since it began back in 2012, switching to the BRSCC from 2016 onwards and continuing to be one of the most entertaining grids in UK club motorsport. The E36 Compact consistently produces fun, exciting and excellent cost-effective tin-top racing and regularly produces excellent racing wherever it appears. In the last couple of seasons, the BRSCC has also been developing the new BMW 1 Series SuperCup, seen as the next generation of BMW racing in the club and providing a competitive platform for drivers to move up into more modern and powerful machinery. Using the F20/F21 1.6 turbo series as the donor car, build kits can be bought from Club partners SW Motorsports for £6,995 + VAT, providing an excellent cost to performance ratio. To grow the future of BMW racing within the Club, the BRSCC has elected to merge the two series together onto one grid, and rebrand it as the BRSCC BMW SuperCup Championship for 2025 and beyond. This means that both Compact Cup and 1 Series SuperCup cars will compete together on track, as showcased for the first time at Silverstone in October 2024. Both Compact Cup cars and 1 Series SuperCup cars will run in their own classes, with respective class winners crowned at the end of the season. The first rounds of the newly formed BRSCC BMW SuperCup Championship will take place at Snetterton on April 5th/6th 2025. More information on the new championship will be available in due course, with registrations for 2025 opening on Wednesday 15th January.
