🌿 🐓 Do you know what a lek is? It's the breeding site for lesser prairie chickens in the United States' Central Plains region. (All grouse species display lekking behavior.) This grassland bird has two distinct populations, both of which have T/E species status at the state and federal level. If you have never witnessed the drumming vocalizations and dancing antics of mating lesser prairie chickens, watch this video! 📽️ You'll also learn how the Colorado Parks and Wildlife is augmenting lesser prairie chicken populations in the southeast corner of Colorado and neighboring Kansas. You can learn more about the bird's natural history and conservation efforts at https://lnkd.in/eM6Ft7Ef and https://www.fws.gov/lpc. The Natural Resources Conservation Service is part of the Working Lands for Wildlife partnership. Through this partnership, NRCS engages in the Lesser-Prairie Chicken Initiative to protect this bird with the help of private landowners. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/edCvrHgU In today's Farmer's Blog from Farmers.gov, learn what a cover crop is (spoiler: not a cash crop) and how it can help this particular bird thrive while improving soil conditions for farmers. https://lnkd.in/eWHzncrc

A couple of years ago, Jacqueline Cleveland went out with Serena Alstrom Fitka and the Yukon River Drainage Fisheries Association and gathered stories from people in Yukon River communities about what salmon mean to them — and what needs to happen to keep them around. We're very happy to finally start sharing those stories today. A key thing many people shared with us: the importance of reducing or eliminating trawlers' 141 million pounds, on average, of bycatch each year. The North Pacific Fishery Management Council has a chance to do that at its upcoming February meeting, at which they'll be considering a cap on chum salmon bycatch. Right now there is NO cap on chum bycatch. This means trawlers can bycatch (accidentally catch and then discard) an unlimited amount of chum salmon — while Alaskan traditional, directed commercial and sport salmon fishermen bear the burden of conservation for a problem they did not create. This isn't right, and it needs to change.
“Since I was born, salmon meant everything to us. We fished every summer. We ate it all winter. I remember collecting fish hearts on the bank in Anvik when we were little. They would be cutting hundreds and hundreds of fish. It was mostly to feed their sled dogs. We would collect hearts in coffee cans and cook them over an open fire like marshmallows. I call them Indian marshmallows. The best memory I have was when I caught a ninety-seven-pound king salmon. My husband was fishing. It was my turn to pull the net and he was driving. I thought I caught a stump. At first he was screaming at me to cut the line because the boat was tipping and I was like, no, no, hang on. I finally got it closer and realized it was a big king, so he cut the motor and came to help me and we got it in the boat. It was like five feet long and ninety-seven pounds. I had to have him help me fillet it and hold it up while I was filleting it. That was a big fish. ” —Wanda Deacon, Grayling, Alaska Story 1 of 4 from Wanda Deacon While Yukon River peoples forgo traditional ways of life to conserve wild salmon, trawlers continue with business as usual — bycatching a documented 141 million pounds of marine life on average each year. This bycatch includes king salmon, chum salmon, halibut, herring, squid, crab, whales and more. Trawlers trail nets the size of football fields to catch everything in the water column. When they drag the bottom, they rip up seafloor habitat and crush bottom-dwelling species in a way that never comes up to the surface to be counted. And “midwater” trawlers, which are allowed to trawl in protected areas, drag the bottom up to 100% of the time. Right now, they’re allowed to bycatch an unlimited number of chum salmon. Take action to tell the North Pacific Fishery Management Council this needs to change: salmonstate.org/bycatch #stoptrawlbycatch #subsistence #alaska #wildsalmon #YukonRiver #GraylingAlaska Photos by Jacqueline Cleveland

Much has been said about the effects of menhaden fishing on the health of marine life in the Chesapeake Bay. Menhaden are used for a wide variety of products including cat food, makeup, and paints. Here is a piece about menhaden and osprey health by Dr. Brian Watts. He and his team have found that the proportion of menhaden in ospreys (and osprey chicks) diet has markedly declined along with that has been a marked decline in the numbers of osprey chicks successfully fledged. Much aof the failure in fledging is due to chick starvation. Current rates indicate a decline in osprey populations in the future. #ospreypopulations #menhaden #menhadenfishing #chesapeakebay #ospreyprey https://lnkd.in/ek8ZxYj8
