Eurofins Forensic Services’ Post

It's British Science Week 🔬 , a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths, so with that in mind, we wanted to introduce some of our Business Unit Managers (BUMA) who work with our scientists on a daily basis. Emma Pagdin is one of our BUMA based in Heathrow, we asked her several questions linking with British Science week: What attracted you to pursue a career in science? "I have always been interested in understanding the logic behind things rather than just accepting things as fact and so was naturally attracted to science. I am informed that I was the child who drove everyone mad by asking ‘why?’ hundreds of times a day due to my inquisitive nature. I therefore always enjoyed science at school and so it was a natural progression to then study science at University and further apply that to my career choice." Who is your scientific hero and why? "I did not have a science hero as a child however after undertaking my MSc at KCL, I became more aware of Rosalind Franklin (who KCL have named a building after) who’s work was actually pivotal to the understanding of the double helix structure of DNA and the molecular structure of viruses. Both research teams/projects she worked within went on to win Nobel prizes for the work undertaken, of which her preliminary work underpinned. I think this sends an important message that what we do now could be instrumental later, therefore regardless of currently application or findings we need to ensure our work is of great quality and full documented as it could be picked up by another scientist in the future and become the last piece of an important puzzle." What advice would you give to future aspiring scientists? "Never be afraid of asking questions, stating you do not understand and asking for clarification is not a sign of weakness but an opportunity to learn more." #britishscienceweek #womeninforensics #science
