The European Commission has highlighted three novel technologies for the space sector that they think will have a major impact on economic growth. Interesting that technologies to enable VLEO are highlighted by the European Commission in the below report (pg 55) as a potential driver of future space sector growth. Thrilled to share my latest research published in Sensors! My article, "Space Debris In-Orbit Detection with Commercial Automotive LiDAR Sensors", explores an innovative approach to tackling the growing challenge of space debris in low Earth orbit (LEO). 🌌 I propose leveraging commercially available automotive LiDAR sensors mounted on CubeSats to create a "Large Cosmic LiDAR" (LCL) system. This system would function like a giant radar orbiting the Earth, with strategically positioned sensors mapping and detecting debris along the target orbit. The research highlights the feasibility and potential impact of this concept, focusing on key aspects such as: - The relative orbital velocity between sensors and debris. - The time required to complete a full orbital scan. - How the compact size, low weight, and minimal power consumption of LiDAR technology make it ideal for this mission. Impressive: by combining observations from the 4 instruments on board ( Radar, Lidar, mutispectral imager and a radiometer), this satellite will provide a three-dimensional structure representing the interactions between clouds, aerosols and radiation in the atmosphere. The much anticipated EarthCARE satellite - developed by Airbus for the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) - addresses two of the fundamental challenges that we face today: climate change and rising temperatures. This holistic view will provide scientists with new insights for developing global climate models of the Earth's radiation balance in the context of the climate crisis.

I am thrilled to announce the publication of our new paper detailing the spaceborne laser technology that powered the #ESA’s groundbreaking #Aeolus mission! Aeolus made history as the first satellite to measure global wind profiles from space using a Doppler wind lidar, significantly improving numerical weather prediction during its nearly five-year operation. Our paper explores the performance of the wind lidar’s two laser transmitters, which delivered over 7 billion UV laser pulses and set a record with pulse energies exceeding 180 mJ in the mission’s final days. We highlight advancements in energy and frequency stability, providing valuable insights for current and future missions like #EarthCARE and Aeolus-2. I am happy to share with you our latest article titled “LIDAR adaptive parameters selection and target pointing control for close-proximity space operations”, just published on Aerospace Science and Technology. While the space sector has recognised the need and potentiality of on orbit servicing and many related technologies have been demonstrated in orbit, rendezvous with uncooperative resident space object, crucial to remediating orbital debris, is still a challenge to be faced. This paper proposes innovative solutions for navigation and control functions in the framework of spacecraft close proximity operations towards uncooperative space target. The work features: 1. an original strategy to autonomously and adaptively select the operational parameters of a scanning LIDAR to optimize the relative navigation performance, 2. a sliding mode attitude controller relying on a reduced attitude representation to address the target pointing task. 🔍 Tracking Space Debris: A Vital Tool for Orbital Safety & Sustainability As the amount of debris in our orbit continues to grow, tracking these objects has become crucial for maintaining a safe space environment. 🛰️ From ground-based radar and optical systems to satellite-based sensors, a variety of technologies are currently in use to monitor and predict the movements of space debris. These technologies help prevent collisions by providing valuable data for collision avoidance maneuvers. While certain sizes of debris are currently difficult to track, rapid advancements in AI and machine learning are leading to the development of new methods to improve the accuracy and efficiency of debris tracking.
