Allan Morton and Ross Browning of enviroMETS Qld have spent the weekend touring the Century Mine site in the far NW of Queensland and showing Peter Whitbread-Abrutat some of the local 'wildlife'. It was a well earned slow down after a week on the road with meetings and presentations.

It’s my first time attending NARUC, and this session was a standout, "Gaining Headroom on the Grid: Leveraging the Demand Side to Accommodate New Loads Now." It was one of the few focused on how demand-side resources can affordably and cleanly manage capacity amid growing demand. Key takeaway was that load growth is not uniform—it’s dynamic and location-specific. This highlights the need for customized solutions that prioritize the time and location of demand flexibility based on the specific customer type. It’s clear that integrating demand flexibility into our grid systems is essential as we tackle the complexities of new loads and a changing grid. #NARUCAnnual24 #VPPs #DemandFlexibility
👋 We’re heading to Anaheim for #NARUCAnnual24 next week! Emilie Moeckel Bolduc, our Chief Commercial Officer, will be attending, and we are excited to connect with you.

Update on the conference!
We are deeply saddened to share that due to the significant devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton across the St. Petersburg and Tampa area, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to reschedule the Barracks Legend Conference. Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by these disasters, and we remain committed to supporting our community as it begins the long journey to recovery. We are now aiming for April 2025, and while we work tirelessly to finalize a new location in the Fort Lauderdale, Miami area, we want to assure you that all tickets will remain valid, and vendor spots are fully transferable. Your support has been invaluable, and we are doing everything we can to ensure that when we do gather, it will be a time of connection, reflection, and hope. We are also happy to share that all the speakers will remain the same, and we thank them for their understanding and flexibility during this challenging time. We understand how much everyone was looking forward to the conference, and we share your disappointment in having to delay. However, the safety and well-being of our attendees, partners, and the local community must come first. We will keep you updated with details as soon as they are available. Thank you for your continued support. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 Let me take you back to prehistoric times, 10,000 years ago. You and your family are hungry, and you really fancy Wild Boar for tea. You and some others go on a hunt, looking for a Wild Boar. You look for a few hours, and have no success. You are now very hungry, and your family needs to be fed. So you find something else to eat, maybe some fruits or roots, gather enough for tea, and head back to the family with your harvest. Sounds like common sense, yes? The main need was to satisfy the appetites of the family, keeping them fed and staving off their hunger. No sign of a wild boar, so find something else to eat. Simple. And yet, in modern life, how would a large organisation tackle this challenge? If the objective was to hunt a wild boar, and no wild boar was found, the organisational temptation is to set up a ‘Wild Boar’ committee. This committee will meet to discuss the challenges faced in hunting Wild Boar, will identify strategies and tactics that will help with hunting Wild Boar, and will develop an action plan designed to improve the chances of hunting Wild Boar by an estimated 10%. Yet if prehistoric families had done this, they would have starved to death. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 ‘𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼’ 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁. If you are in this situation, you can ask, ‘so what are the good reasons for doing this?’. You can then follow up with, ‘what other good reasons do we have?’ as many times as you like so that you get a full picture of the difference the activity will make. One you know the reasons for doing something (in this case to feed my family, help them sleep, help them grow, help them have energy to work etc) then it is easy to see the different ways you can deliver these reasons. You will also have noticeable differences to watch out for, and this will help you if your first course of action isn’t giving you what you want. 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 is conversational common sense for a complex modern world. Next time you are tempted to set up a committee to investigate a problem, just ask yourself what reasons you have for wanting this, and what difference you will notice when the problem has reduced or gone away. You might just find easier ways to satisfy your hunger pangs than just hunting the Wild Boar. Ready to explore these simpler solutions? Sign up for a Zoom call with me, and let's uncover practical strategies to tackle your modern challenges. Qualitative researcher specialising in recognising and managing slow developing, invisible 'insidious' risk with potential to culminate in a crisis; such as risks of mine closure that must be managed over decades.
8moI hope Peter Whitbread-Abrutat you also meet some awesome women in your travels who have exceptional knowledge of post mining like Karin Fogarty, PhD and how to find value in mining wastes Anita Parbhakar-Fox and Helen Degeling so important in reducing mine footprints and creating value.
