One of the brilliant things about having worked here is the number of people with such specialist knowledge.

A highlight out of 2024 for me is the development of the network of the Clean Energy Community Initiative. This effort evolved from a small partnership gathering for an NSF proposal, that did not get endorsed for submission, but now supports a very significant amount of Clean Energy deployment projects in Wisconsin. It is based on pervasive two-way engagement with communities and is centered around community driven technology selection and implementation. This represents a uniquely valuable space for our faculty in the College of Engineering to bring their technologies to aplication, addressing community priorities and needs. https://ceci.wisc.edu/

This month, XPRIZE released the detailed “Getting to Gigaton” report, which provided comprehensive data and analysis of the top 100 teams competing for the Carbon Removal prize. A few weeks later, they announced the top 20 finalist teams competing for the grand prize. The headline may be catchy and yes there is once in a generation demand growth, but it should not spar utilities with renewable-energy-minded organizations. During the last 20 years the demand growth was largely offset by efficiency gains.
