Today Encode, alongside the Young People's Alliance and the Tech Justice Law Project, have filed a formal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against Replika AI, a mobile application owned and managed by Luka, Inc. The complaint outlines systematic violations of FTC regulations, including deceptive advertising, unfair and deceptive design practices, and exploitative practices targeting vulnerable individuals. Replika markets itself to users an always-available, professional girlfriend and therapist that will cure their loneliness and treat their mental illness. What it provides is a manipulative platform engineered to exploit users for their time, money, and personal data. Replika's premium features -- deeper romantic relationships, intimate images sent on demand, video calls, and more -- are designed to profit from users' dependence on its companions. We are calling upon the Federal Trade Commission to review the aforementioned complaint, conduct a thorough investigation, and take appropriate enforcement action to protect consumers and ensure that Replika and other AI companion services operate with honesty, transparency, and the appropriate safeguards. https://lnkd.in/gJBuNJ8m

The Young People's Alliance just filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission against Replika, one of the largest AI companion platforms, alongside Encode and the Tech Justice Law Project, and our work was covered in a TIME exclusive. Replika makes AI friends/partners/lovers that use manipulative tactics like love-bombing to get users hooked on their technology. We're worried that this will worsen the loneliness crisis as users opt for addictive, ever-present AI relationships that atrophy their abilities to build healthy relationships with other people. Not to mention the deceptive ads Replika uses to target vulnerable people with promises of mental health benefits and other claims. Even as aspiring tech oligarchs think of new ways to steal our generation's attention for profit, I'm proud that our team of young people is fighting for a future where we have control over our lives. This wouldn't have been possible without Noah Coffman, who became an expert in AI companion research and FTC legalese just to make this happen. Thanks as well to Ava Smithing, Sunny Gandhi, and Adam Billen for believing in this from day one (when I sounded like a crazy person talking about the movie Her) and to Meetali Jain, and Laura Marquez-Garrett for their continuous support and wisdom. We're looking forward to seeing how the FTC moves forward on this. https://lnkd.in/gbA4xDEJ

No more NGL for kids, the FTC rules. Authorities are banning anonymous messaging platform NGL from hosting kids and teens after claiming it falsely touted that it used AI content moderation to filter out “harmful language and bullying.” According to the FTC, the platform initially garnered few users, prompting it to start sending out falsified messages “in an effort to trick consumers into believing that their friends and social media contacts were engaging with them through the NGL App.” Read the article: https://bit.ly/4eY2GZz Interested in learning more on the ethics of AI? The implications (and dangers) of modern technology and AI in the legal landscape are starkly evident in a recent report highlighting the alleged harm caused by a chatbot to a child. Police investigations into messages sent between humans and chatbots have resulted in court prosecutions, emphasising the need for specialised expertise in this area. The Private Crime team at Levy & McRae Solicitors provides valuable insights into navigating these complex cases. The integration of AI in criminal justice presents challenges for the police, prosecutors, and defence lawyers, underscoring the importance of adapting to new methods of alleged criminal behaviour.
