We're thrilled to launch a new initiative to support mental health and wellbeing through football across Leicestershire and Rutland in partnership with Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council and Rutland County Council!🌟 The 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯𝘀 programme will provide adult men with inclusive, relaxed football sessions at five grassroots clubs: AFC Andrews, Ellistown Football Club, Harborough Town FC, Lutterworth Athletic FC and Sileby Juniors football club! ⚽ Under the "My Space, My Game" brand, these clubs will offer weekly or bi-weekly sessions that create a supportive environment for players to unwind, de-stress, and connect. As part of this, key club members will receive mental health training to better support players on and off the pitch. On World Mental Health Day, it's encouraging to see progress in how football fans in the UK are becoming more open about mental health. 📊 GWI data shows that the percentage of UK football fans who feel comfortable talking about their mental health has increased from 46% in Q4 2022 to 49% in Q2 2024 — a statistically significant rise. This growth likely reflects the continued focus on mental health within football, with players, clubs, and initiatives advocating for more open conversations. In my Current and Ethical Issues in Sport and Recreation class with Professor Christine Cleaver, we were tasked as a group with finding a problem in the sports industry, conducting research, and finding a solution to help with the problem. My team, Morgan, Zach, Zeke, Amira, and I were responsible for researching and finding solutions that can help the NCAA address mental health problems for student-athletes. Frustrated. Three young men from a Football Club in WA stepped up to organise a Mental Health Workshop with us for their footy club, aiming to make a positive impact on their community. However, the club's board decided against it, citing concerns about the workshop impacting their performance close to finals. It's disheartening to see young men being dismissed when trying to contribute positively to their club. The club's focus on alcohol-based fundraisers leading up to the year-end raises questions about priorities and the impact of binge drinking on mental health. Prioritising wins over the well-being of players sends a concerning message. When will community sports take mental health seriously, especially after recent tragic events? It's time to shift focus towards well-being initiatives and create safe environments for athletes to thrive both on and off the field. #MentalHealth #CommunitySport #WellBeingInitiatives

Former Premier League footballer Clarke Carlisle on: personal identity and the opinions of others in football. Clarke is currently Chief Operations Officer at It’s Mental, Ambassador at Mind and Motivational Speaker. He was also formerly Chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA). Clarke is also a lovely guy and I’m grateful to call him a friend! 🙏🏻 Here are some takeaways from the full interview which we will post this Thursday on LinkedIn: 1. The football industry’s focus on external validation significantly impacts players’ mental health, especially in the age of social media. 2. Psychological support and a clear distinction between the football mentality and everyday life are essential for players’ well-being. 3. Generational conditioning has shaped attitudes towards masculinity, making it harder for men to show vulnerability, especially in sports. 4. The younger generation is more open and communicative about mental health, representing a shift in attitudes. 5. A societal paradigm shift is needed to focus on mental wellness, prioritising prevention and understanding what keeps us well. 6. Therapy provides a safe space for self-exploration and growth, helping individuals understand their emotions and challenges. 7. Low points and life challenges are necessary for personal growth, offering perspective and appreciation for the highs. 8.
