What do the latest announcements by OpenAI and Google mean for education? Media literacy is more important than ever. As this article outlines, the rapid evolution of generative AI will disrupt one of the pillars of our digital life, search. This disruption will fundamentally change how we access, analyze, and evaluate information. The stakes are quite high. For the past year, AI has made our information ecosystem more difficult to navigate (https://lnkd.in/dZFqzmxG). And, early research (https://lnkd.in/dWkwjtyf) shows that search is the primary use case of genAI amongst young people. We are fast approaching a future where every step of the inquiry process is mediated by synthetically generated content. So, how can we re-envision media literacy to prepare young people to flourish in a future with AI? These are a couple of ideas that are taking root in my head: Nurture “multimodal” critical thinking skills. The biggest technological breakthrough announced this week is that LLMs can now natively process and generate different types of information (images, text, and audio). This "multimodal" capability will enable us humans to seek information in new ways. Google, for example, explicitly calls out “visual information seeking” as a use case for their latest Gemini models (https://lnkd.in/d7sfdJZj). To help young people navigate a world of multimodal AI, we need media literacy interventions that: strengthen visual thinking, create the space for deep reading, and challenge students to engage in critical listening. Develop media literacy strategies that address the affective dimension of information. I was surprised by the evolution of Human AI Interaction (HAI) we witnessed in this week’s product demos. Generative AI is becoming more conversational and emotive. This evolution will ultimately challenge how we believe and build trust when we consume information in digital environments. To navigate this tricky information ecosystem where conversational AIs are more prevalent, we need to develop new media literacy strategies that get at the heart of the Human-AI relationship. Still, there's room for more pedagogical innovation in this space.

This week, I completed the How to Get into AI course offered by the University of Leeds, Click Start London, and the Institute of Coding. With AI becoming increasingly prevalent across many professions, I wanted to make sure I understood how I could leverage it effectively. It was fascinating to explore how AI technologies can support me in areas like SEO, copywriting, customer insights, content creation and optimisation, predictive analysis, research, and much more.- Completing this course has given me the tools and confidence to leverage AI capabilities in my role! 😊 💻

This goes for revision assistance, first drafts (regardless of few shot learning), and more.
