Before 1993, women were rarely included in clinical trials. Today, more than 30 years after the FDA reversed the restrictive ban excluding women from clinical trials, the medical field still doesn’t know how well many drugs and devices work for women. 1977: Pregnant women are banned from participating in Phase I/II clinical trials. This ruling is also used to exclude women of reproductive potential in an extreme attempt to avoid adverse events following the thalidomide tragedy which caused severe, life-threatening birth defects. Early 1980s: A task force on women’s health concludes the exclusion of women from clinical trials had compromised healthcare for women 1986: National Institutes of Health issues a policy to encourage women's inclusion in clinical trial research. It is largely ineffective. 1993: FDA regulation passed in 1977 is reversed, and more women are included in clinical trials 2022: A Harvard Medical School study finds that women, as of 2019, were still substantially underrepresented in clinical trials for leading diseases. Research shows that more diverse clinical trial leadership increases diverse enrollment. Is your company ready to join Women As One’s partners in creating a more equitable future? According to research from Ludovica Castiglia in partnership with FemHealth Insights, one of the most damaging things a female founder of a femtech company can do is to use words such as "empower", "take control", and "gender gap" (amongst others) in their funding pitch. Why? 🤔 Because "women advocating for women’s rights are seen as being emotional, upset and angry rather than businesspeople maximising profits.” 🙄 So, let me introduce you to MAXWELLIA a female founded (shout out Anna Maxwell) consumer healthcare company whose first four commercialised brands are designed for women. And yes, these brands will "empower" women to better look after themselves, by "taking control" of their sexual, reproductive, and menstrual health 💪 These products also plugged a gap in the market, where there was a significant unmet need, and therefore will maximise profits 📈 Who knew female founded businesses could support women and make good business sense? Crazy! Oh, and by the way, we are currently seeking investment. We're not technically 'femtech' but you should definitely take a look, it's a great opportunity: https://lnkd.in/e22n9C2H Want to know more about the research quoted? Women pharmacists have made significant contributions to the field of pharmacy, science, and healthcare, including creating impactful inventions and innovations. While some of these women may not have created singular “inventions,” their breakthroughs in pharmacy practice, medicine, and pharmaceutical science have shaped healthcare for the better, ensuring their legacies as true innovators. 1. Mary Engle Pennington (1872–1952) – Revolutionized safe storage and transportation of medicine through advancements in refrigeration. 2. Zada Mary Cooper (1875–1961) – Advanced pharmaceutical education for women and co-founded Lambda Kappa Sigma. 3. Elizabeth Gooking Greenleaf (1681–1762) – America’s first female pharmacist, paving the way for future women in the profession. 📰 Whitepaper: Patient Recruitment and Retention in the Age of Diversity Action Plans 😀 With the FDA's new diversity guidelines taking center stage, a critical challenge persists — the underrepresentation of diverse populations in participant recruitment. This white paper delves into the multifaceted landscape of diversity encompassing cultural, gender, socioeconomic, and educational factors. Historically, diversity has been framed as a human rights issue, but this paper highlights the direct economic benefits and risk-mitigating properties of diverse patient recruitment. By exploring the importance of diversity, current obstacles, and proposing inclusive strategies, we emphasize both the moral imperative and economic advantages of fostering diversity in clinical trials. How does a clinical trial plan for patient recruitment and retention, particularly as it relates to diversity? How do you not only attract but keep patients engaged in studies? What strategies are required to meet these evolving expectations and ensure successful trial completion Download your Free Whitepaper now at Clinials #DAP #Clinicaltrials #Diversityaccessplans
