As we honor Veterans Day in the United States, I'm reminded of Winston Churchill's words: "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." For our US veterans, this courage is a way of life. They exemplify resilience, the grit to push forward in the face of setbacks, and the commitment to serve a greater purpose. In business, too, we face challenges and moments of adversity where success feels distant and failure too close. But like our US veterans, it’s our courage to continue, to adapt, and to keep moving forward that defines our leadership. This Veterans Day, let’s take a moment to learn from those who have served. Let’s challenge ourselves to embody that same strength and determination in our own fields. To all veterans—thank you for your courage, your resilience, and your unwavering dedication. #VeteransDay #MotivationalMonday #Leadership #Resilience #JumpingCurves #ActivatingTransformation

How #MightyIKE’s CAPT Chris “Chowdah” Hill Used Cookies and Tacos (and Bombs) to Fight the Houthis In this interview with Ward Carroll (Mooch), CAPT Chris “Chowdah” Hill, commanding officer of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, describes how he used both traditional and innovative leadership methods, including social media, to boost morale during a uniquely challenging deployment. His approach combined daily communication, recognition of sailors, and fostering a sense of mission purpose. He became known for using #socialmedia platforms to engage the public and sailors’ families, sharing updates on life aboard the ship and events like #TacoTuesday. His leadership philosophy, outlined in, "The Way of the Warrior Sailor," emphasized the critical role of morale and communication in maintaining operational success and sailor well-being. Some gems on #leadership that resonated particularly: ✅️ "Morale isn’t always about cookies and dogs… It’s about feeling valued, being part of the mission, and having a sense of purpose." – Reflecting on how true morale stems from recognition and mission clarity rather than superficial incentives. ✅️ "Leadership is about setting up the game so that everyone can win. You’re both coach and umpire, creating a rigged game in your sailors' favor." – Emphasizing the leader’s role in creating opportunities for success and motivation. ✅️ "It’s part of my philosophy to love and value sailors. These are terms we are not afraid to use." – Highlighting his commitment to openly appreciating his team and fostering a family-like atmosphere. ✅️ "If you want to retain a sailor in the Navy, ask them: ‘Hey, would you like to reenlist?’ That’s a power we can use on other people." – The power of direct, personal communication and making people feel wanted as a retention tool. ✅️ "Mission and purpose are almost a gift. It’s the essence of what drives people to do things they otherwise wouldn’t." – Underscoring the importance of providing a clear and meaningful mission to inspire dedication. On this Veterans Day, we honor the Americans who have worn the uniform and served our nation with steadfast dedication. What truly defines a veteran is more than miles marched, oceans crossed, skies soared, or battles fought. A veteran embodies a unique blend of qualities forged in the fires of service: * Courage: The willingness to face adversity, even when the odds seem insurmountable. * Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks, stronger and more determined than before. * Adaptability: The capacity to thrive in ever-changing environments and embrace new challenges. * Expertise: The mastery of specialized skills and knowledge gained through rigorous training and experience. * Integrity: The unwavering commitment to doing what's right, even when it's difficult. These are the traits that make veterans not only exceptional service members but also invaluable assets in the business world. They are the leaders who drive innovation, the top performers who exceed expectations, the subject matter experts who share their knowledge, and the dependable team members who consistently deliver results. This Veterans Day, let's recognize and celebrate the unique qualities that American veterans of all branches bring to our companies and our communities. Their service has shaped them into the top talent we need to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. #VeteransDay #ThankAVet #Leadership #TopPerformers

180 Days to a New Chapter: Reflecting on 28 Years of Service and Finding Humor in Leadership Today marks 180 days until I retire from the military and embark on a new journey. After nearly three decades dedicated to military service, this transition feels both exciting and profound. Reflecting on my career, I remember a lesson in leadership I learned early on at Ranger School. One brutally cold morning in the mountains, I was tasked with getting my platoon up and ready to move. It had snowed the night before, we hadn’t slept or ate much, and leaving our somewhat-warm sleeping bags felt impossible. Instead of barking orders, my Ranger Buddy and I decided to do something…different if not ”unconventional”—using a little humor. We stripped down to just shorts (boots on, of course) and paraded around the patrol base, shouting, “Rise and shine! The weather is fantastic!” Laughter broke out, and within minutes, everyone was up, motivated, and ready to go. That day was a success, and it was a lesson I’ve carried with me ever since: sometimes a bit of humor is a great way to bring people together to accomplish a task, even in the toughest conditions. Now, as I prepare for this next chapter, I look forward to using the leadership, and problem-solving skills I’ve developed to make a meaningful impact in a new role. I’m excited to bring a sense of purpose, my problem-solving skills, and—occasionally—a bit of humor to whatever comes next. #Transition #Leadership #DataDriven #DesignThinking #NewBeginnings #HumorInLeadership

Only 30% of veterans feel their unique experiences are understood by society. This staggering statistic highlights the urgent need for us to listen, respect, and support the brave individuals who have served our country. Veterans' journeys are filled with diverse challenges and triumphs that deserve recognition. ↳ Embrace the individuality of each veteran's story ↳ Provide tailored resources that meet their specific needs ↳ Foster a culture of respect and recognition within organizations It's time we go beyond standard support and genuinely engage with veterans on a personal level. Their experiences can guide us to create better programs and policies. Let’s make a conscious effort to bridge the gap and uplift our veterans! #Veteran #VetDisability #Leadership #VeteranSupport #MentalHealthAwareness

A Lesson on Leadership from the Filthy Thirteen: WWII's most unorthodox heroes Ever heard of the paratrooper unit that jumped into D-Day with mohawks and war paint? Meet Jake McNiece and the Filthy Thirteen - a group of misfits who became legendary warriors. Here's why their story matters: 1. Leadership isn't always by the book 2. Unorthodox methods can yield extraordinary results 3. True grit often comes in unexpected packages 4. Mission focus trumps traditional discipline 5. Even the wildest spirits can find redemption Key takeaways: • McNiece's unconventional leadership saved lives • The unit's "deliberate disobedience" was actually strategic • Their nickname came from literally being filthy (for a good reason) • 4 combat jumps - a rare feat for WWII paratroopers The Filthy Thirteen proves that sometimes, the most effective soldiers don't fit the mold. Remember: In leadership and life, results matter more than appearances. Learn more by listening to my conversation with Richard Killblane. Link in the comments. #leadership #history #wwii #strategy
