🌱 New Year, New Non-Profit! 🌱 We’re thrilled to announce a significant milestone for Earthself: the creation of a dedicated non-profit organisation to advance the food forest movement in Scotland through Emiel’s Food Forest. Here’s what Earthself Initiatives will focus on: 1️⃣ Living Laboratory: Leveraging Emiel’s Food Forest as a living laboratory to demonstrate the viability of food forests as a nature-based solution. This initiative fosters connections between people, land, and heritage, benefiting both ecosystems and the communities around Loch Rannoch. 2️⃣ A Nature Positive Scotland: Inspiring a student-led movement to create food forests across universities and local communities, with the Rannoch area serving as a demonstrator model. 3️⃣ Community & Business Engagement: Engaging local communities and businesses in the Rannoch area (and beyond!) through hands-on learning and community-driven environmental stewardship, showcasing the regenerative power of food forests. ✨ This represents a major milestone in Earthself’s journey, as the seed for this non-profit first emerged through Earth almost 10 years ago. Let’s grow together—this is just the beginning of an exciting year ahead!🌳 #FoodForests #NaturePositive #RegenerativePractices #EarthselfInitiatives Image: An aerial view of Ketelbroek Food Forest, surrounded by green fields and bordered by rows of trees along a road. The food forest stands out with its dense, multi-layered vegetation in autumnal hues of green, yellow, and orange, demonstrating a rich ecosystem.

🌟 “The progress achieved in one year is extraordinary.” 🌟 It’s hard to believe it’s only been a year since Earthself committed to stewarding Emiel’s Food Forest. A year ago, this was just an idea. Today, it’s a living reality. Here’s what we’ve achieved together: From Concept to Implementation 🌳 In October 2022, the food forest was still a dream. By October 2023, it became reality with trees and hedging planted, marking the first phase of this incredible project. Gaining Additional Interest and Support 🤝 With the support of the Scottish Innovation Voucher via Interface, we developed and designed the project. Through ongoing outreach, we’ve welcomed 14+ businesses and 14+ individual sponsors who have joined us in establishing Emiel’s Food Forest. (Our crowdfunding campaign finishes tomorrow so there's still time to donate: https://lnkd.in/eR6CkmrY) Developing a Strategic Vision and Executing 📽️ Beyond planting, we’ve laid out a roadmap that includes: Establishing the food forest Producing a documentary Providing training and creating pathways Building a replicable food forest model This strategic vision now guides the project forward. Building a Movement of Food Forest Ambassadors 🌱 Overwhelmed by interest, we welcomed an incredible group of students from universities across Scotland to plant the first phase. These Student Food Forest Ambassadors will now help to build awareness for a Scottish Food Forest Movement. As we settle back into winter, our focus turns to securing funding for the next phases of growth this spring. With continued support, we’re creating something that’s about more than trees—it’s about cultivating community, connection, and regeneration with the land and Earth itself. 🌿 Thank you to everyone who has been part of this extraordinary journey so far. Here’s to the next steps together! #FoodForest #NaturePositive #NetZero Image: An image of the food forest with trees in the ground and one tree with its green leaves in the foreground

Last week, a Coat Drive was launched by the Sustainability Society at BCU which allows students and staff to donate any unwanted coats which are still in good condition for other students to use so that they can keep warm in the cold, winter months 🧥 This has been put into place by the society after it was highlighted that international students hadn't anticipated quite how cold it would be when they got here!❄️ The coat rails are located at the BCUSU Reception on the first floor of Curzon Building - go here to add your unwanted coat to one of the rails, or if you are in need of a coat feel free to take your pick from the coats on the rail. This initiative is a great way to reuse unwanted clothes, prolonging the coat's life cycle and saving it from landfill. #BCU #Birmingham #City #University #SDG #Sustainability #Sustainable #Environment #Environmental #Development #Goals #SDG12 #Responsible #Consumption #Production #The #Global #Goals #CoatDrive #Donation

Veolia UK has donated Fruit Tress to 300+ schools across the UK 🤗 Not only does this initiative naturally have myriad positive impacts for the immediate & extended environment (i.e. improving air quality); it also encourages children to become more aware of their own connection to nature, fostering increased reverence for all things "green". Children are the future. Positively articulating in their impressionable minds the importance of improved biodiversity (and the principles of self-sufficiency and provision - i.e. harvesting fruit) etc... is key to raising a generation of conscious, caring individuals - who regard our planet as one worth respecting. Children are our future decision-makers and custodians of Earth. So great to work for a company that invests in such initiatives. 👏 https://lnkd.in/gnjDTpSb

A sustainable initiative I had at work made it into the local paper... We identified an opportunity that would help us towards our sustainability targets whilst also helping schools/charities in the community. It was observed that a substantial amount of carton protection divider sheets were being discarded into blue recycling bags (the divider cards are required to ensure the cartons are protected whilst in the box), amounting to approximately 4 bags of recycling per order, weighing around 60kg per month. This is just on one line. The divider sheets are A3 in size and are very good quality and can be reused in many different ways, particularly in learning environments. Recognising the potential for improvement, we embarked on a collaborative initiative with local schools and charities in the area. Our initiative was met with enthusiasm by everyone we met during our trips. On our travels we visited: Tytherington High School, Marlborough Primary School, Bollinbrook Primary School, Fermaine Academy and Space 4 Autism. They were all very grateful for the high quality card and have eagerly agreed to support our site's waste reduction targets by reusing these sheets in various creative ways within their educational environments. This collaborative effort marks a significant milestone in our journey towards achieving our waste reduction objectives. The success of this trial initiative, showcases the impact of proactive engagement and innovative thinking working together with operations and procurement. Moving forward, we intend to build upon this success and explore opportunities to implement similar initiatives across relevant assets within our organisation. #sustainabilitymatters #sustainabilityatmacclesfield #LocalCommunity #Sustainability #supportinglocalschools #supportinglocalcharities #supportingstem
