Fort Worth, Texas, is one of the fastest-growing cities in one of the fastest-growing regions of the country. But Mayor Mattie Parker says continuing that growth isn’t just about attracting new businesses and building places for their employees to work and live. It’s about preserving green space for the future. In October 2023, Parker announced the Good Natured Program, with a goal of setting aside 10,000 acres in the next five years and creating a nonprofit land consultancy. A recent analysis by the Trust for Public Land highlighted how investing in and creating additional parks, trails, and green space have become more crucial for economic development. In a city that stretches over 350 square miles and has still only developed half of its land, Mayor Parker says it’s important to make sure that parks, green space, and tree canopy are strategically and thoughtfully included and prioritized in the other half. The homes we build around the world come in all shapes and sizes, catering to the needs and styles of local communities. Just this past week, Habitat for Humanity Chicago broke ground on a project that will include 20 townhomes featuring their own garages, community green spaces, and three- and four-bedroom floor plans. We position parks as critical infrastructure but don’t provide them with the funding to back it up. We value community engagement but don’t create enough avenues for people to get involved. Park People writes about the importance of collaboration but many of us in municipalities work too often in silos. Through Park People's survey of 35 Canadian municipalities, 2,500+ residents of Canadian cities, and interviews with park staff and other professionals across the country, this year’s report illuminated key insights (these are some among others): Park budgets are not keeping pace with needs. • 80% of cities said the parks operation budget was insufficient. • 78% of cities said insufficient budgets meant inadequate staffing levels, while 75% said it meant delays in park projects or planning. Residents feel disempowered but want to engage. • 52% of residents said they do not feel they have a voice or the ability to influence what goes on in their local park (e.g., design and programming decisions). • 83% of cities said that with limited resources, it can be difficult to conduct ongoing, proactive community engagement beyond standard consultation on park projects. Sharing a letter from the Terwilliger Center's Advisory Committee at Bipartisan Policy Center urging swift passage of the Yes in My Backyard (YIMBY) Act. #YIMBY would require U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant recipients to report on any efforts within their respective jurisdictions to reform zoning and land use policies to support additional #affordablehousing supply. Examples of pro-housing efforts include: enacting high-density single-family and multifamily zoning, allowing manufactured homes in areas zoned primarily for single-family residential homes, reducing minimum lot sizes, streamlining or shortening permitting processes and timelines, and eliminating or reducing off-street parking requirements. Regulatory policies too often delay or prevent the construction of new affordable homes and impede economic development. #YIMBY aims to encourage local communities to reduce these regulatory barriers and take steps to address our nation’s severe shortage of affordable homes. 🚀 Exciting Project Announcement! 📚🏙️ I’m excited to be leading a new project for our Urban Design team helping a major Texas city explore how new library construction can maximize community benefits. Libraries are critical social infrastructure — in addition to being great places to learn and access information, they are one of the few places that are open to all, free of charge, and climate-controlled, providing refuge on hot days and often serving as emergency shelters. They are essential places that support opportunity, equity, and resilience. The opportunity to build a new library doesn't come along often, but when it does it offers so many possibilities, from affordable housing integration to new open space to serving as a multi-purpose community hub. The library of tomorrow isn’t just about books—it’s about leveraging public resources to build stronger, more connected communities. Manorwood Homes Ltd, a Cavco company, has partnered with Habitat for Humanity International to build modular homes for deserving families.  These factory-built modular homes are constructed to high quality standards in less time than traditional stick-built homes. This innovative approach to working smarter, not harder, is the perfect way to expand Habitat's impact in the communities it serves. “It’s been our absolute pleasure to build our relationship with Manorwood Homes (Cavco),” said Maureen Lashlee, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Dutchess County, New York. “At a time when America is experiencing a housing crisis, Manorwood Homes has helped us grow from building one house every two years to building five houses in one year.” Looking ahead, Manorwood Homes and Habitat for Humanity are gearing up for several new projects. In Ulster County, they will break ground on a 10-lot subdivision this fall, featuring eight Manorwood modular homes and two stick-built homes. Dutchess County has another ranch home on order, with groundbreaking for a five-lot subdivision planned for spring. Similar plans are underway in Monroe, Steuben and Orange counties.
