Here's a brief timeline of Epic interoperability from the lens of Carequality and TEFCA. I'm curious if Carequality will exist in a few years and, if so, what role it will play.
====================================
Jan 21, 2016: Epic adopts the Carequality Interoperability Framework (along with athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, NextGen)
2016-2023: Carequality expands its network, increasing monthly clinical document exchanges from 1 million to 1 billion, eventually reaching 100% Epic customer adoption
December 12, 2023: TEFCA, the key ONC initiative to expand health information exchange, becomes operational. Epic's Nexus is among five of the first Qualified Health Information Networks (QHINs). Carequality is not designated as a QHIN
March 21, 2024: Epic filed a formal dispute with Carequality against Particle Health, alleging that certain Particle Health customers were inappropriate accessing patient data through the Carequality network. Epic also raised concerns about Particle Health's technical implementation, suggesting it might obscure the identities of organizations requesting medical records
Aug 16, 2024: Carequality announces it will align with TEFCA but is not pursuing designation as a QHIN
Aug 19, 2024: Epic publicly announces it plans to have all its clients committed to TEFCA participation by the end of 2024, with a go-live target for the end of 2025. Epic customers will transition from the Carequality network to the Epic Nexus network
