What do we think of Wimpy? Strategically speaking I mean. The UK Burger business reported a 17% fall in revenue and a whopping 68% drop in operating profits last year, with the leadership team citing a decline in footfall and economic conditions as reasons. So what’s going on? Here’s my take. As consumers, we don’t really know what Wimpy is. Is it fast food or is it a restaurant to sit for a leisurely dinner? On the one hand, the imagery used to portray the brand mimics McDonalds and Burger King. Big juicy burgers and fries in red cartons. But the experience is completely different: a server will bring you a menu and food is served on china plates with *actual* cutlery. Consumers are confused. When and why would they choose Wimpy over other options? This is a classic case of not understanding or defining what market you’re in. This sounds like SUCH an obvious thing for any leader to know inside out, but if you haven’t nailed this fundamental element of strategy development, you have pretty much zero chance of succeeding. If Wimpy is in the sit-down-and-eat market, it needs to understand how it can stand out against alternatives such as Nandos, Pizza Express or Zizi. If it’s in the take-away market, how does it compete with slick operations such as KFC or Five Guys? How does it build a compelling positioning and proposition that gives consumers an obvious reason to walk into its restaurants? If you don’t understand what your customers want, what needs you're meeting, or who the competition is, you’re going to struggle to find the strategic clarity you need to win. If you’re struggling to define your market, start with the problem you’re solving for customers and work back from there. It might just be that a tweak or refinement of your market definition gives you the insight you need to move your business forward in a more strategic way.
