It is a pleasure to announce that our paper "Large-Scale Crowd Size Classification With a Wi-Fi-Based Passive Radar" has been published in the IEEE Sensors Journal! https://lnkd.in/diUCgSKk In this paper, we develop a privacy-friendly crowd size classification framework relying on a passive radar exploiting Wi-Fi signals at the physical layer, for applications in public event safety management and mobility analysis. --> For more details: our contribution is to demonstrate experimentally that a Wi-Fi-based passive radar using preambles from the recent 802.11ax standard can classify crowd sizes of up to 100 people. This extends previous studies limited to a few dozen people and older Wi-Fi standards. The PDF of the paper (author's version) is accessible on the institutional repository of ULB: https://lnkd.in/dTZrn9a3 and on Researchgate: https://lnkd.in/dBctP2b9

Our latest work, "Distributed versus Centralized Sensing in Cell-Free Massive MIMO," has been accepted for publication in the IEEE Wireless Communications Letters! 😊 Many thanks to my co-authors Qinglin Zou, Zinat Behdad, Cicek Cavdar! You can find the early access version on https://lnkd.in/dZdEcXXZ In this study, we explore a novel approach to integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems in a cell-free massive MIMO setup. We compare traditional centralized sensing with a new distributed approach where partial sensing occurs at the access points (APs). The results show that while the fully-informed distributed approach matches centralized performance, the partly-informed setup achieves significant signaling load reductions.

cont'd The position statement and short bio of Prof. Giacomo Oliveri can be found below POSITION STATEMENT If elected as an Ad-Com member, I have set forth the following objectives: - Inclusivity: I am committed to ensuring that every member's voice is not only heard but actively sought out from every corner of our community. Informed decisions that benefit everyone will be a priority. - Industry Engagement: I strongly advocate for increased involvement of both young and experienced professionals from various industries in IEEE AP initiatives. This can be achieved by integrating them into strategic decision-making processes, events, and society-wide initiatives. - Impact and Awareness: To narrow the gap between perceived and actual impact, I will initiate dedicated AP events and outreach programs. These efforts will serve to educate the public on the relevance of AP-S research in addressing present and future technological and societal challenges. - Multidisciplinary Advancement: Recognizing the vital role of a multidisciplinary approach, I will champion the development of AP-S sponsored activities and publications that underscore the pivotal contribution of antennas and propagation in cross-disciplinary research areas. This will propel our society towards greater success and relevance. SHORT BIO Giacomo Oliveri (M’06-SM’13-F’24) is an Associate Professor at the University of Trento, Italy, and a Board Member of the ELEDIA Research Center. He has been Adjunct Professor at CentraleSupélec and member of the Laboratoire des Signaux et Systèmes (L2S)@CentraleSupélec, France, from 2012 to 2017, an Invited Associate Professor at the University of Paris Sud in 2014. He is author of >450 peer-reviewed papers, among which >150 on international journals. His works have been cited >8800 times and his H-index is 47 (Scopus). His research work is currently focused on smart electromagnetic environment methodologies and technologies, system-by-design and metamaterials, and antenna array synthesis. For the AP Society, Prof. Oliveri has been Chair of the Press Liaison Committee, Coordinator of the Industrial YP Travel Grants, Member of the Fellowships Evaluation Committee, Member of the Field Awards Committee, Member of the IEEE AP-S Membership Benefits Committee, and AE for IEEE AWPL and IEEE JMMCT.
I am pleased to announce that Prof. Giacomo Oliveri, Board Member of the ELEDIA Research Center and IEEE Fellow, is a Candidate for IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society AdCom in the triennium 2025-2027 in Regions 1-8.
