New life-saving care options are here, but most emergency medical services agencies can’t afford them. Adding blood products in ambulances, for example, could save lives by delivering oxygen to trauma patients before they even reach the hospital. However, adding this life-saving care option creates significant costs. Many EMS providers want to offer the highest level of care, yet reimbursement rates remain fixed by federal law, and private insurers often follow these same limits. This means agencies have limited options for adding new, life-saving services without straining their existing budgets. The quickest path to saving money while funding these advancements is through operational efficiency. When EMS agencies automate and streamline labor-intensive processes like billing and administrative workflows, they reduce operating costs and redirect those savings toward innovations in patient care. By reallocating savings, agencies can enhance their response capabilities - putting life-saving tools like blood products within reach for the first time.
