Jim Flatt is a prominent figure in biotechnology and bioengineering, with a career spanning over 35 years dedicated to transforming scientific breakthroughs into commercially successful health products. He's now been named as CEO to DMC Biotechnologies, Inc. with the leaving of Matt Lipscomb for Alta Resource Technologies. Noteworthy accomplishments of Jim's include: Co-Founder and CEO of Brightseed: In 2017, Flatt co-founded Brightseed, a company utilizing artificial intelligence to discover phytonutrients for health and wellness. Under his leadership, Brightseed developed 'Forager,' an AI-powered platform that maps bioactive compounds in plants to promote proactive health solutions. Chief Technology Officer at Synthetic Genomics: As CTO, Flatt led the development of new products in partnership with leading Fortune 100 companies, including Novartis, ExxonMobil, and ADM. His work focused on advancing synthetic biology applications across various industries. R&D Leadership at Martek Biosciences: Flatt led research and development at Martek Biosciences, a leader in developing fatty acid nutritional products for infant brain and eye development, and cardiovascular health. He oversaw the design and construction of the first large-scale microalgae production facility, contributing to the commercialization of DHA Omega-3 from algae. Advancements in Biofuels and Plant-Based Foods: Flatt led breakthroughs in producing biofuels from yeasts and bacteria with energy research company Mascoma LLC. He also developed plant-based food products and novel plant-based protein ingredients with food manufacturer Hampton Creek Foods. Flatt's educational background includes a PhD in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of California, Berkeley. His extensive experience and leadership have significantly contributed to advancements in biotechnology, nutrition, and sustainable health solutions.

It's been an intense morning of talks on diverse topics (described below) but there have been a couple of common themes, namely: Collaboration is key - don't go it alone, someone is likely experiencing a similar issue even if they're approaching it from a different point. Sustainability is a vast topic and every little step on the journey helps. It's cumulative. Take a step back to move forward - understand where you are and where you are trying to be, there might be a better path. Andrew Brown of Lonza described Cell Culture Strategies to Improve Yields and Sustainability. They are creating high density inoculations using continuous perfusion ahead of fed batch cell culture and seeing >70% increase in yield. Francois Taute of CellRev described the use of a proprietary blend of enzymes to control cell to cell adhesion and prevent aggregation which can enhance cell culturing by maintaining effective mass transfer and can simplify downstream processing. Ellen Parker of Extracellular described development of continuous manufacturing processes that can run for greater than a month to grow cultured meat. Enrique Carredano of Cytiva discussed In-line Conditioning to prepare media and buffers at source in real time reducing footprint, man hours and consumables in manufacturing.
