The presale valuation for this May's auctions is down significantly from two years ago and 17% from last year. That might seem like this is an auction season to skip. But the real work of building markets takes place in these periods. The art market is getting more diverse in the sense that more buyers are interested in a broader number of artists. Here's an end-of-the-week brain teaser in two parts (with a bonus question thrown in because it's Friday): Sotheby's auction house just sold a $0.35 single banana taped to a wall by an artist, for $6,200,000. The value of the 'world's most expensive banana' was attributed to the 'artist's intention'. Question: If the value of intention is defined as the difference between the auction price and the cost of the materials, calculate: 1. The value of intention in this case. 2. What percentage of the total auction price is attributed to the artist's intention? Bonus: If people made their intentions explicit rather than open to interpretation, how might this affect the way we calculate the value of intention?
