"Mental wellness in children is about giving them the tools they need to thrive, not just survive."
On 17th October 2024, I had the honor of leading a truly meaningful and enlightening series of sessions on mental health at St. Karen’s Collegiate School, where we addressed some of the most pressing issues today’s adolescents face: tech addiction, social media pressure, and the rat race technology indulgences.
The packed hall, filled with eager parents and students, was a testament to the pressing need for guidance in today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world. From social media pressure to technology indulgence, the confusion around how to navigate modern adolescence is real, but together, we explored solutions.
For students of Std. 9 and 10, our session titled "Smart Millennium Teen" equipped them with essential tools to manage anxiety, build resilience, and develop emotional intelligence. We delved into the impact of social media on self-esteem and mental health, discussing how to cultivate a positive online presence while setting healthy boundaries. We also emphasized the importance of self-care practices, peer support, and seeking help when needed.
Meanwhile, parents joined “Parenting as Partners – Proactive Parenting”, where we discussed evolving roles, shifting from the parent as a protector/provider to the Parent as a Coach.
I introduced the Proactive TALK model which empowered students by encouraging open communication about their feelings, enhancing self-awareness, and promoting active listening among peers.
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, sparking a new commitment from the school to integrate mental health and counseling sessions as a regular part of their curriculum.
